Might be a silly question, but as I don't know the answer... Do Arbiters get paid?

Re: Clock Stoppage.

With a digital clock, it might say 40:00, and chances are I have between 39:59 and 40:01 left on my clock. In the 4NCL, if you are playing both playing at a Jack Rudd pace, it could be 100 minutes or even 130. If a digital clock says 40:00, that's 40:00 to 40:59 as it rounds down. Excalibur clocks ...

Re: Data Protection

I really think some people need to get a life. It's not like the congress organiser is posting your details on the net. Being careful is one thing, distrusting the organiser of a chess event is just plain paranoia.

Re: Open Letter to the ECF about junior selection

Re logistics etc. - Couldn't a parent wishing their child to go not simply pay the ECF upfront along with a disclaimer to say that any additional costs will be the responsibility of the parent/guardian and not the ECF? From seeing how much the Welsh juniors enjoyed Greece I’m all for serious junio...

Re: Sleeping properly after a game?

I find that my head is buzzing and on some occasions genuine pain is felt in the frontal lobes area. I used to suffer from this when I started out as a 120ish player over a decade ago. I tried really hard to work out continuations in my head and as I wasn't used to it I'd find my head would hurt fo...

Re: Road to Grandmaster

Should, say, a sub 140 player stop learning opening theory then, until he gets to a certain level? I guess it's about understanding the difference between remembering lines and actually understanding the theory. a lot of sub 140 players just remember moves without knowing why the moves are good/why...

Re: Women's World Championship 2-25 December 2010

I noticed a few things in the contract the players have to sign http://www.fide.com/images/stories/news_2010/WWCC/players_contract_wwcc2010.pdf 4.3: "For the two years following the Championship, the Women’s World Champion shall agree to promote chess around the World and be ready to attend promo...

Re: Advertising on the ECF homepage

It seems the ECF homepage advertsies things without any vetting of the relevancy, or in some cases the legitimacy, of what is being advertised. Hence we end up with random tournaments in some far flung corner of the World, pushing important news off the front page. I really wish someone at the ECF ...

Re: Road to Grandmaster

Strong players consistently punish the weak players for deviating from theory. Weak players end up in garbage positions within the first 15 moves; the rest of the game is just mopping up by the stronger player using his technique, positional judgment, and calculation in a position that is already s...

Re: No more e2e4 events?!

Given that Sean has single-handedly created some of the most high-quality tournaments available in England, successful for a number of years, it is imperative to find out what has lead to this. Having had to experience the most horrendously organised and administered tournaments in my chess-playing...

Re: Fritz 12 - Be Careful

I have Fritz 11, 12 and Rybka 4. I don't think it's worth the upgrade at all. I also prefer fritz 12 to rybka 4 - for some reason it calculates variations much quicker than rybka does on the same settings. Unless you have money to burn I wouldn't suggest you upgrade from Fritz 11. Spend it on a corr...
