Re: FIDE Ratings

Being from the North West and having played in tournaments for the last 25 years (as a junior for 10 of them), I have noticed a big deterioration in the tournaments 15+ ago you could have played a tournament nearly every other week (being QP and Long Play), whereas today I can count on maybe 10 tour...

Re: The ECF President

The main problem around any system/calculation is the frequency of updates The more frequent the updates the more accurate the rating will be, hence using the FIDE model would be currently better It would be a personal choice which calculation you use but I think the FIDE model is better, mainly due...

Re: The ECF President

Ian, The basic way of looking at it is this if you are graded 200 ECF (converts to 2250 FIDE) and play 30 games against 175 ECF (2125 FIDE) and get 50% your new ECF grade would be 175, though if you did the same performance in FIDE your expected score would be approx 20 out of 30, thus losing 75 FID...

Re: The ECF President

I think that one a the benefits around FIDE rating is the way it is calculated, also having a standardised world system does help for international tournaments, home or abroad The ECF grading system is basically an average calculation and is very rigid (especially as it is only an annual figure) Whe...

Re: General Election

I do remember playing him about 3/4 years ago in a Stockport League game, though it was a quick game and I won in 15 moves

Re: World Championship 2010

There has been 4 decisive results, and a few of the draws have been very competitive with chances on both sides Therefore 12 games seem to have been a fair representation, it is just unfortunate that it could finish 6-6 I agree with Alex, that FIDE struggled to get this match played, trying to make ...

Re: Final Scores

I just think a regional division 3 format might be a bit fairer for the Southern Div 3 teams don't have to travel to the Midlands for 4 weekends may just the last weekend So you would have Northern League based around York/Leeds/Manchester (Crewe is too far South for most northern teams) Midland Lea...

Re: Final Scores

Roger, I think the plan is for 3Cs to definitely enter the second division. Alex, Personally, I can see the Northern League becoming more of a stand-alone league, unless you have a regional 3rd division system (i.e. Northern, Midlands, and South-East and South-West) with maybe the top two from each ...

Re: Final Scores

Why would 3Cs enter the northern league when we have just got promoted to the 2nd Division? The whole point of entering the 4NCL is to pit yourself against the strongest players, personally this is why the northern league is a small side issue, and if Northern teams with any ambition should enter th...

Matt, it is very rare that you get the "bad bishop" in the advanced variation, this normally occurs more frequently in the Steintiz and Tarrasch variations

Re: Is the French Defense going out of Fashion?

Personally, I feel there is more dyanmic play in the French itself. I also believe that there are more lines available in the French for branching off. At my club we have a strong correspondence player who has very good opening knowledge, and he also believes that the Caro is a rather boring opening...

Re: Is the French Defense going out of Fashion?

I have been doing my best to help keep it out of fashion by playing 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.exd5 - my opponents groan every time I uncork that one - not the best line for white by any means, but it means you can play without having to conceed the horrendous positional weaknesses that white is normally fo...

Re: Is the French Defense going out of Fashion?

There has been alot of new ideas and developments in the French of the pass couple of years

It all comes down to how committed you are on keeping on top of these new developments

I try and look at any new games in the openings I play every couple of weeks, and I am only a low amatuer player

Re: Strange Fault with DGT Clock

Dave, I am sympathetic with your worries, I think most of us had similar problems the first time we used them (new technology and all). But after using them more and more frequently, they get alot easier to understand I think the problems that may have occured is with different people setting the cl...

Re: Is the French Defense going out of Fashion?

Matt, I presuming you have based your comments around the statistical evidence available on Megabase 2010 and up-to-date games on TWIC (cannot verify this as I am at work) As most openings suffer fluctuations in popularity, I wouldn't say it is running out of steam, especially at the amateur level T...
