Re: Caplin Hastings All-Play-All
"1.8 All players agree to play 11 meaningful games of chess in order to achieve the best placing they can in the final results table, in the full spirit of the game and the FIDE laws of chess. Failure to do so may result in the Chief Arbiter deciding that all or part of the players fee or prize mon...

Re: Cheating in chess
I don't understand why people like Charles Moore in the Spectator get so wound up and and accuse the BBC of persecution when they have no licence and no TV at a property. They obviously couldn't be bothered to return the appropriate form. My experience, when renting a flat while working away from m...

Re: An Unwanted Record
I was hoping that this was not true but it would appear to be. 2020 is the first year since 1979 that no single British chess person received any kind of FIDE honour and then 1971 before that. :( Not true according to this list - https://ratings.fide.com/title_applications.phtml?pb=61 I'm also wond...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal
That's put paid to Kraków, not that it seemed likely to go ahead from Dec 27 anyway (the venue hotel has to shut from the 28th) It's started. I can find nothing on their website saying it's not running as normal, other than some minor changes to the schedule and the addition of a new tournament gro...

Re: Cheating in chess
Whilst I can only speak for myself, I think most players would care if they lost a tournament game to a cheat, particularly if they think they would probably have won without the cheating.IM Jack Rudd wrote: ↑Sun Dec 27, 2020 7:05 pmNobody much has challenged them yet because there hasn't been much reason to

Re: Cheating in chess
So if you set up a casual challenge match with a specific player, that won't be flagged because you could have arranged with them to use an engine. Most of this player's casual games, other than those against lichess's computer, were actually in tournaments lasting 7 or 8 weeks where players were p...

Re: Cheating in chess
The player in the attached PGN file has had their lichess account marked as "This account violated the Lichess Terms of Service" in a web browser and "This player uses chess computer assistance" in the app. That had happened by 18 December, and may well have been a week or so earlier if it's correct...

Re: British Online Chess Championships 18th December 2020 to 3rd January 2021
Is there much experience of people who couldn't play chess on their own to any standard at all, being a success under ICCF rules? Many years ago, before home computers were available and therefore before strong chess playing programs were available, there were quite a few examples of players with v...

Re: Explanations for an idiot (Winter British)
I find it too difficult to work out from the website how this "winter British" is working. How many are pre-qualified, how many can still qualify, to what do they qualify, and how to find the games?? I have tried discerning the above from the document on the ECF website but it seems to assume or om...

Re: British Online Chess Championships 18th December 2020 to 3rd January 2021
To prevent mom/dad/sibling/friend/coach from communicating into the room? The ease and potential of cheating with something in the player's eyesight but not on cam is great. And doors/windows make it easy for the evidence to disappear and hide. Perhaps mirrors in the room should have been banned as...

It could be a worthwhile benefit, but, as far as I can see, there's no complete list of retailers included in the scheme, with their discount levels, available prior to joining. For me, the question is whether it's any better than Reward Gateway , which I already have access to. Without a list of re...

Re: British Online Chess Championships 18th December 2020 to 3rd January 2021
With 902 entries to date, the event seems quite popular, although it's not obvious how many people have entered multiple events to determine the number of different people taking part. Now an impressive entry list of more than 2000, but no easy way of telling how many different players there are in...
