Re: What's GM short doing?!

Nick, I was also puzzled by that. On inquiry, it appears that it was a mistake, from the FIDE office, for listing Sara Khadem under the FIDE flag. They simply used an old template, involving Firouzja. It may look a bit suspicious, but it is just a cock-up. Yes, I also got that back, wasn't sure whe...

Re: What's GM short doing?!

It is not a good look for the chess world generally that so many of their top players and arbiters either have escaped from their country or are being prevented from doing so. The latest FIDE newsletter reveals that Sarasadat Khademalsharieh will play in the Gibraltar leg of the Women's Grand Prix,...

Re: What's GM short doing?!

so far as I can tell, Soheil says that "most if not all" Iranian players would "fear the consequences" if they played an Israeli player. For anyone even to hint that they players might be choosing to miss or default these games because of personal animosity is quite indefensible, unless they have s...

Re: What's GM short doing?!

So far as I can tell, Soheil has said that Iranian players would be happy to play Israelis and also that their federation does not force them not to do so. This makes their observed behaviour difficult to explain..

Re: COVid19-What's wrong with UK?

Thousands of unnecessary deaths and major economic damage, in comparison to nearly everywhere else, all down to the incompetence of 1 man; yes, that man must be Corbyn, not Johnson All true, but I don't think Johnson has a clue about what is going on around him. When things are bad enough, and they...

Re: What's GM short doing?!

Council could then pretend that this sounds OK, and life could carry on I'm sure you have your reasons for wishing that players be allowed to refuse to play against opponents for whom they profess hatred, but I can assure you that is not the FIDE position. Most of the chess world, including some wh...

Re: British Online Chess Championships 18th December 2020 to 3rd January 2021

I think it's quite likely that some players who aren't very good at OTB chess can play CC very well. That is certainly true in my case and there is a good reason for it. I have never been able to keep a position in my head - if I am walking around during a game and you ask me to reconstruct the pos...

Re: What's GM short doing?!

ok, that's a bit more detail that I didn't know. But I would be surprised and disappointed to think that so many in the Assembly are happy to see Iran thrown out, so I'd be interested to know your reasons for supposing otherwise. Also what is the likelihood of Council expelling Iran? If that is min...

Re: What's GM short doing?!

But, in order to answer Nick, the President's motion was for a lesser measure than throwing Iran out of FIDE- and the natural assumption is that it had a better chance of passing? And (here I am guessing) there is no appetite for returning to the matter in the near or foreseeable future? I think yo...

or do you accept that the majority in FIDE think differently?
I don't understand why you would suggest that.

Tbh I am very much in the "Johnson is the same person now as he always was" camp.
That is a defensible position, and I doubt that historians will reach agreement.

Re: COVid19-What's wrong with UK?

Maybe the film version? Denethor in the books is quite impressive overall, before he gives into tragic despair - which certainly isn't a state of mind Boris appears especially prone to! I have been a Boris apologist ( and have had much to apologise for! ) so I do stand by the book version. I suspec...

I believe Oxfordshire is still tier 2 so you may find the Thames Valley police indulging in their fantasies of becoming the Stasi by erecting a virtual wall along the eastern and southern borders with Berks and Bucks.
I think you can bet on that.

Unless or until I'm prepared to set up a home video studio, I'm taking a break from "serious" chess.
I took that decision months ago, have been sticking to friendly events.

Re: COVid19-What's wrong with UK?

anyone still disagreeing?   Within my circle of acquaintance, there are widely differing views regarding the competence of the Boris who went into hospital. There is greater consensus regarding the Boris which emerged. Our PM has for some time reminded me of some well known ficti...
