Re: iPad app for lightning chess? help!

This one generates a beep rather than a buzz, but it does allow you to set a loop to the timer that will give a regular sound:

And it's free!

Re: Media comments on chess

Chess finds its way into 'Dumb Britain' in this week's Private Eye: Presenter: How many squares are there on a chessboard? Caller: Er...37? Somewhat unfairly, I feel, given that there are indeed 37 squares on a chessboard. Given the clumsy wording of the question, 64 (presumably the answer they were...

Re: Flagfall at time control

I expect we've all seen it happen. A player makes his last move before the time control and starts his opponents clock. Without playing a move, the opponent points out that the flag is down. So valid claim or not? The flag can only have fallen before the move was completed by pressing the clock. Th...

Love the yawning Bishop! I'd forgotten about that one.

I've had many a bad Bishop in my games that must have felt the same way.

Re: Chess in adverts

Just found this online. The chess connection is tenuous to say the least.

Can't say I remember this particular product. The section of board we can see suggests a vaguely plausible (and legal) position.

Re: Candidates Tournament 2013

They did rather seem to be scratching around for co-commentators today. They should have said. I'd have done half an hour behind the mike for the price of my ticket. Seriously, though, I enjoyed my day at the Candidates. Chesscasting is a really interesting way to get the live and online audience i...

Re: Candidates Tournament 2013

It's been good to hear everyone's experiences of visiting the Candidates tournament. I'm looking forward to seeing round 7 this weekend. Just a quick question - I can understand the rigorous body checks before being allowed in the playing hall, but is it true that mobile phones (even switched off) a...

Re: Candidates on TV?

I've seen the Sky Arts 1 & Sky Arts 2 schedule up to 20 April (i.e. several weeks) and there's no mention of anything with 'chess' in it at all. Doesn't sound like there's gonna be anything televised for it, although I'll be happily proved wrong! I was hopeful of some chess airtime too, but recent ...

Re: Candidates Tournament 2013

I've been keeping an eye on http://www.locatetv.com/uk/listings and so far no sign of any Candidates coverage on either of the Sky Arts channels. Nothing chess-related on the Sky Arts website, either. Current listings only go up to March 18, and these may of course not be set in stone. But I remain ...

Re: An Open Letter To Steve Giddins

The problem is that by mocking this forum he is asserting that issues should not be highlighted and debated and that those attempting to do so should be silenced. A case in point is FIDE Licensing of players. There's a cartoon in the March 2013 "Chess" by "BackRankTristan" which lampoons FIDE's ide...
