Re: An Open Letter To Steve Giddins

The problem is that by mocking this forum he is asserting that issues should not be highlighted and debated and that those attempting to do so should be silenced. A case in point is FIDE Licensing of players. There's a cartoon in the March 2013 "Chess" by "BackRankTristan" which lampoons FIDE's ide...

Re: Chess via Up-Goer Five

This is addictive - I liked your description a lot, Matt. As someone prone to waffle and verbosity I found it really hard! Here's my effort: A meeting of minds, a fight to the death. It makes me smile, it makes me cry. In the moment it means so much, But still it is just a game. I care about it, pro...

Re: Do you consider this bad sportsmanship?

That depends on when the desired loo break would have taken place. I take it the game was Jelsen v Clayton Hastings 2011. In that game Black missed 88 ... Rh8 and was thereafter lost allowing a mate in 33. At that point there was a latest possible completion time even with increments. Think about i...

Re: Do you consider this bad sportsmanship?

...but what should a player who needs an urgent toilet break do if he is very short of time? Would he be entitled to ask the controller to stop the clocks for a few minutes? This reminds me of a situation I found myself in at Hastings a couple of years ago. Six hours in to what turned out to be a g...

Re: Draw by repetition claims

I disagree with Ian. 12.4 The scoresheet shall be used only for recording the moves, the times of the clocks, the offers of a draw, and matters relating to a claim and other relevant data. Marking the first, second etc. occurrence of a repeated position on the scoresheet would come under the "matte...

Re: London Candidates?

On an obscure historic note, the Intel rapid-play series was on TV for a couple of years after Kasparov-Short. I seem to recall some, albeit minimal, coverage of Kasparov-Anand in 1995, on BBC2. I think it might have been a weekly highlights show, with Bill Hartston using the same touch-screen boar...

Re: e2e4 London Diamond Jubilee Congress

John, Thanks for shooting the front, rather than the back, of my head! I particularly liked the shot of the restaurant. Photo number 52 is not John Kelly - it's Vladimirs Bovtramovics. Photo 72 is Conor O'Donnell (I think). Thanks Brendan. My best side is neither front nor back! Conor is 12 years o...

Re: e2e4 London Diamond Jubilee Congress

Here's my round 1 game from Gatwick, which was pretty exciting - watch out for my opponent's 29th move which I'd completely overlooked. All credit to him for finding it when short of time! I'd played some bad moves earlier on but managed to claw my way back to what I thought was a decent position......

Re: Pocket Fritz 3, Fritz 10 & Chessbase 10

Devices that can run PF3 are VERY few and far between... Indeed...it only sold for just over a pound! I used to run it on an iPaq, with was perfect for the job but is old technology now. I think Chessbase really need to improve their current mobile apps, which are pretty poor in comparison to Pocke...
