Re: Your 5 favourite books
Two good books by Dzindi.. are Complete Reportoire for White and the other bizarrely for Black. What I like about these books is the clear and simple analysis, diagrams and tips. Dare I ask what happens when Dzindzi's complete white repertoire meets Dzindzi's complete black repertoire over the boar...

The lime-flavoured soaps at Sunningdale are very tasty, but I find the towels rather dry.Christopher Kreuzer wrote: Maybe soaps and towels in hotel rooms should be the next topic of conversation?

Chess at the Edinburgh Fringe
Just spotted this from BBC News: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-14646532
The 5th funniest joke at this year's Fringe comes at the expense of our beloved game.
I still found it quite funny, though.

Just looked at the full text of the article, as I have institutional access to the journal through work.
Not one single mention of chess.

Re: 2010-2011 Grades?
In my defence, a simple GMail search threw up these dates.Brendan O'Gorman wrote:Tristan,Tristan Clayton wrote:The last few years I've received my results list on 23/6/08, 7/7/09 and 23/6/10, so sometime in the next few weeks I'd guess.
As I think you suspect, you need to get out more.
But yes, I really must get out more.

Thanks, Roger - that's helpful and makes a lot of sense.
Thanks, Sean, for confirming my suspicions.

Superfluous notation clarification
Apologies in advance for what must be one of the most trivial questions ever. Take the moves 1.d4 d5 2.Nc3 e6 3.e3 Bb4 4.Nge2 The 'g' in white's fourth move is, of course, unnecessary as the Knight on c3 is pinned. So why does every computer program I've come across put the square clarification in t...

Re: New chess league for London
Personally I also think Stewart's second point should be given greater priority in leagues and tournaments. Duplicate scoresheets and games being made available for download are becoming more common, even on the weekend tournament circuit. I wonder if other players agree? Of course, entering games i...

Re: Where does Anand sit in the list of World Champions?
I've always felt Anand to be a very worthy World Champion, and a fine ambassador for the game. I miss the traditional longer matches and drama of previous cycles, and perhaps the current shorter format (and relatively lower profile) doesn't allow a champion to define his place in history as easily. ...

Re: New chess league for London
Superb idea - I really hope it succeeds! I've never liked adjournments or adjudications, so this is one league I'd willingly play in.
If anyone's looking for a team member, message me as I work in London. I'm only ECF 154, but I occasionally succeed in playing a half-decent game.

Probably not my worst squandered point, but it stuck in my mind. It's from Sirisena-Clayton, Surrey Congress 2006: http://img808.imageshack.us/img808/9440/unledpb.jpg I'm three pawns up and have multiple ways to win. I played 26...Ke7 . Can't be bad, I thought. I'm attacking the undefended Rook, fre...

Re: French Chess Federation investigates cheating players
I should just make clear that we have no proof that the offender cheated in his game against Tristan. When he was "subsequently rumbled", we felt it appropriate that he should forfeit all his games at the event. Yes, that's an important clarification. Events during my game lead me to conclude that ...

Re: French Chess Federation investigates cheating players
This is a topic I have been giving a lot of thought to, and especially since a recent tournament I played in where one of my opponents was found to have been cheating. Having defeated me in an earlier round with the assistance of a pocket computer, he was subsequently rumbled, disqualified from the ...
