Re: ECF Council Meeting 12 April 2014

Julie Denning ..... read out a prepared statement about the missing Sussex Archives. The words "dismayed" and "carelessness" were used, but it appears that a line has now been drawn under this matter. This is the Sussex County Chess Association statement referred to above: "We had, for an extended ...

There are a number of FIDE related issues affecting down to the club players, for example the fact that the FIDE rating regulations exclude the vast majority of chess games...

Re: ECF Council Meeting 12 April 2014

Which is probably a good point to ask if Council discussed who should fill the vacant roles of President and NED? Or whether the Commercial Director 10th post was discussed? I'm assuming here that no-one else has resigned Apart from the mention above on Andrew Leadbetter's proposal there were two o...

Re: ECF Council Meeting 12 April 2014

Calling on Mike Gunn to chair the meeting seems to have taken the heat out of the situation and enabled all business on the Agenda to have been completed satisfactorily. Can we rely on Mike Gunn to chair future meetings or will the infighting be allowed to continue without a neutral umpire? Will th...

Which is probably a good point to ask if Council discussed who should fill the vacant roles of President Wasn't it reported earlier in the thread, that they considered and rejected the idea of a recall for Roger Edwards? No... what Council rejected was a proposal (a) for the Board within one month ...

Re: Dealing with a crisis as a captain

I have seen a spectator recording the game where both players are very short of time. This could have helped if there had been a dispute, (assuming both players agreed it was accurate) but I think it was mainly as he knew his club colleague would ideally want a record of all the moves. As a captain...

Re: Very late Canditates Master certificate from ECF

When did you gain the IM title? IIRC the policy used to be that the E(B)CF paid for IM and GM titles, but not for lower titles (prob. only applies to FM, at the time). I certainly never paid for my title/certificate/badge in 1997, nor was I asked to. *awaiting invoice* I'm too young to reme...

Re: Arbiter levels

What appears on the ECF is broadly what the CAA have campaigned for. As David says there were concerns expressed at the AGM about non-qualified English people being put forward by the ECF for FIDE NA status without a requirement to at least attempt to qualify as an arbiter. This is now being done a...

Hastings Congress dates 2014/15

Con Power, Congress Director, has advised Hastings club members as follows: "....here are the details for this year's Congress (which is now official). We start one day later than usual (Mon 29/12). Mon 29/12 to Fri 02/01. A five-day Christmas Morning and a five-day Christmas Afternoon. Fri 02/01 to...

Re: to Vice-Presidents and Life Members

By one of those quirks of a rather archaic set up the Hastings & St Leonards Chess Club (an unincorporated entity, not an individual) is one of the two 'delegates' at the ECF Council of the Honorary Life Vice Presidents, Vice Presidents, Corporate Vice Presidents, Honorary Life Members, and Life Me...

Re: Board Orders

This arises from a discussion we had at yesterday evening's Surrey board meeting about the penalties which are applied for "incorrect" board orders in matches. It is generally held (I believe) that a devious (or competitive, depending on your point of view) captain might want to change his board or...

Re: Media comments on chess

Chess on Ice was the lead-in headline to this piece on Curling. Alas the website editor seems not to have read the article - it contains no mention of chess! It's a quote from the BBC resident expert on curling, Jackie Lockhart. She certainly referred to "Chess on Ice" in an interview this morning ...

Fee for grading checks?

Just a random thought, and I believe the Manager of Grading reads this forum... I have a couple of my club members querying their grades and in at least one case I can't resolve it. Perhaps a grading surgery, ECF charging £10 to set out in full detail how the grade was arrived at? Fee refundable if...

Re: ECF Game Fee - Club internal games

£13 to join a national federation for a year for anything is peanuts, really. I agree with this. How many Hastings members are we talking about? Perhaps the Hastings club could absorb the cost? That is an option we will look at if push comes to shove. But it would still be members paying more, alb...
