Re: Carlsen - Anand 2014

I do think you are being a bit hard on him....... Let's put it this way: if I had a tenner, I wouldn't put it on Anand at the 12-1 odds the bookies are currently offering. To stand the ghost of a chance, Anand has to win a game in the next few rounds. Somehow. Or the one-game deficit will continue ...

Re: Carlsen - Anand 2014

In case it hasn't already been mentioned, Anand is also psychologically fragile. Specifically, he can't put up the kind of fight Kasparov did in his first match against Karpov when he was down 5-1 and Karpov needed only one more win. Anand has trouble playing opponents who are at least as good as h...

Re: Chess and Mathematics Conference London Olympia 6-7

I get 326 from two different methods of calculation. I'm fairly certain this is correct (or they could both be wrong and just happen to coincide). I'll write down my modus operandi when I have a bit of spare time.

Oops, arithmetical error. 296 it is.

Re: Chess and Mathematics Conference London Olympia 6-7

Arshad, I have read the BMO question a couple of times but I still cannot see why you are multiplying by 2. Matt My fault -- my eye elided over "one in each row." Otherwise you would also have to include all the paths that start from the left (a2, a4, a6, a8) and end up on the right (h1, h3, h5, h7...

Re: Chess and Mathematics Conference London Olympia 6-7

For some reason I get 385. The BMO problem is a bit different and I think using symmetry, the answer should be 385*2 (assuming my answer is correct). Postecript: 385 is wrong, I'm double counting some paths. Whatever the answer, multiply by 2 for the BMO problem. Postscript 2: Multiply by 2, then ta...

Re: Chess and Mathematics Conference London Olympia 6-7

Suppose it starts on b1 and want to find how many paths to g8. Work backwards from g8. From g8 it can go back to h7 or f7. If h7, there is only one path to b1. If f7, there are two paths back -- one through g6 and on through e6. If, g6, there is only one path to b1. If e6, then two paths back, throu...

Re: Standards at chess clubs

One of the local clubs here had a player show up in torn clothes. I haven't got the dosh for a decent outfit. And I suppose my shave leaves much to be desired as well (Have you seen the price for razors these days?). Maybe the impecunious should be barred from playing chess -- only real toffs allow...

Re: Does your club have chess books?

I got Nunn's book on the French Tarrasch and Taulbut's book on the French at about the same time. I'd say the former was an excellent The Complete... -style book, and the latter an excellent How To Play... book. The former kind date very rapidly while the latter are good for explaining the strategi...

Re: Chess and Mathematics Conference London Olympia 6-7

Comes back to the definition of maths I guess :) I suspect a good majority of active chess players did A level maths. A good number will have then gone on to do maths/stats/ comp sci/ engineering or such like at University and then onwards in life. They can do it quite easily and its useful enough....

Re: Chess and Mathematics Conference London Olympia 6-7

There is Richard Borcherds, who gave up chess in his teens but who probably would have become a 2600+ GM if he'd stayed the course.

Re: Chess philosophy

If you're after perfect accuracy, then I guess so :) The trick nowadays is presumably to manage to tame and condense all the terrifying (and broadly useless) forests of variations the computers will merrily generate. You certainly should correct old books where the mistakes are instructive. Keep th...

Re: Chess and Mathematics Conference London Olympia 6-7

Don't know about Speelman but Nunn was admitted to Oxford to study Mathematics as the youngest undergraduate since Cardinal Wolsley long before he became a GM. He is at the top end, there are many others with a similar correlation between chess and maths abilities. Other than Nunn, who could have b...

What you should have done after sacrificing your queen is to have resigned, and then shown your opponent there was a forced mate.
