Re: Anand v Gelfand

I'm afraid I'll have to side with Nigel Short on this one.

Re: English Arbiters to suffer???

One cannot get away from the fact the everything has cause and effect. The legal action against FIDE has resulted in Lara being excluded from a lifetime opportunity. There are those who seek to separate the two issues but that cannot be so, one has led to the other and maybe more such actions will ...

Re: English Arbiters to suffer???

Regardless of the right/wrong of the ECF's legal action this is outrageous behaviour by Ali Nihat Yazici/FIDE. I really don't understand what he sought to achieve, a boycott by the countries involved now seems inevitable unless he backs down. Without reference to the rights and wrongs, I am willing...

Re: English Arbiters to suffer???

Both Chessbase and TWIC seem to have been supplied with a copy of the ECF letter to FIDE. Isn't it strange that Lara was not afforded the same courtesy. When I requested a copy from the CEO I was effectively told that it would appear on the ECF website on Monday. I assume that the letter is genuine...

Re: e2e4 London Diamond Jubilee Congress

I think in a 9 round international I agree with strict computer pairings. I have a bit of sympathy for pairing two team mates(who possibly wouldn't bother to travel for the Friday game if they knew they would play each other) for the first game of a 5 round weekender. If I was running the tournament...

Re: THE MYSTERY OF THE BLACKPOOL MINOR

Look at Scarborough. Apart from offering good prize money it has the same prizes in all sections which is brilliant and one of the reasons I enter. I've never understood why open sections should have the largest prizemoney when they often have the fewest number of entrants. I've been told it's too ...

Re: THE MYSTERY OF THE BLACKPOOL MINOR

I don't see why ungraded players should be allowed to win prize money at all, except in the Open. If such a rule puts off a few sharks then its all good. I don't understand why the lower sections of tournamnents have such big prize money anyway. I'm graded in the 190's and there is no chnace of me ...

Re: Anand v Gelfand

The title of 'world champion' is not imo a title that should be treated lightly. To add your name to such an illustrious list it should be necessary to beat the current world champion in classical chess(not in a rapid play off). If the classical games end in a draw to my mind the match is drawn and ...

Re: Anand v Gelfand

Would the match have been livelier if Anand had draw odds? It could have been livelier (in the sense we would probably have seen Gelfand taking risks and getting trashed) but it would not have been fair. A chessboxing match could have been more entertaining as well, the point though is that enterta...

Re: England teams for 2011 European Team Championship

Just read through the thread to get a flavour of how things went today, and am now off to look at the actual games (2-2 is good, but it sounds like there was potential for a great win). On other matters, in the spirit of grouching, would it be impolite of me to ask that things like football results...

Re: Does publishing games give anyone an advantage?

I thought in the article he said the other junior was his pupil?[/quote]

Right you are. I'm sorry I misunderstood, I thought that the whole point that he had been part of some coaching group with Lorin. So in fact there weren't any grounds for offense whatsoever :?

Re: Does publishing games give anyone an advantage?

In this context it is clearly being used to describe a move that looks logical enough but does not consider the long term aims of his position. Anyone with experience coaching juniors will know exactly what he means as this is very common(yes it happens at adult too but not so much). There is nothin...

Re: Road to Grandmaster

I'd say generally that on-line coaching is not treated very seriously by most coaches. That said you can always learn something from strong players of course. If you can find a good coach face to face you'd be much better off. Skype may be a decent alternative I've never tried it, given where you ar...

Re: Your 5 favourite books

Endgame Strategy - Shereshevsky (when I was starting out found Kosten's more basic 'winning endgames' quite useful too) Practical rook endings - Mednis Probably out of print now but remember Phil Adams lent me a very ancient looking copy. All the need to know positions. Secrets of grandmaster chess ...
