Re: 2016 European Club Cup

Chess-results show Henry's Rp after 6 rounds is 2478 and that is actually the rating of today's opponent so clearly a draw is indeed sufficient? (Even without raising his 1877 opponent to 2050.) I've no formal experience of these things, but my interpretation of the regulations concurs with yours, ...

Re: World Championship Predictions

Carlsen has a rating advantage of 81 points, which is an expected score of 0.61 per game. Not sure what the underlying distribution of results would be, though. You could model the match as a series of 12 independent trials with probabilities of results as 0.3 Carlsen win 0.6 draw 0.1 Carlsen loss ...

Re: New broadcast model for World Championship Match

The assumption is that those sites don't have to pay for being allowed to do this (presuming that this could even feasibly be restricted). Is that assumption correct? There are restrictions (due to betting syndicates) on live transmission of tennis and cricket results, maybe in other sports as well...

Re: New broadcast model for World Championship Match

A minor point, but how is Agon pronounced? (I don't think I've ever heard anyone talk about it in real life). Sounds like a gonner, or for football fans in North London, a Gooner. I pronounce it "A-gone" as opposed to "Ah-gone" Thank-you. So like the Dutch insurer? Perhaps I have heard people talk ...

Re: EU referendum aftermath

An interesting discussion (and as may be typical, one that may have profited us from being conducted before the vote...). Nevertheless, I hope to learn something, You seem very confused. If the bank of England deemed in the best interest of the British economy to devalue the pound, they could have d...

Re: 2016 Olympiad - Baku

Regarding league chess I suspect that for ease of administration many local rules will make reference to official laws of chess in some guise or other, and only highlight differences. This may leave grey areas, or differences of practice. During a match all players may approach their team captains f...

Not the most important thing right now, but should it be "Netherlands" rather than "the Netherlands"? (I assume not "Holland".)

Re: New (and first) Welsh Grandmaster

Apologies for resurrecting this thread, but researching the hoary old problem of transferring allegiance in an attempt to help our new poster, I came across this exchange. In other news: John Dempsey (formerly Scotland) transfers to Virgin Islands to become their 7th-best player. Going back to John,...

Re: Do I need to be England Federation In Fide to play world youth ?

All the information is available in the FIDE Handbook (see previous post). Registration would be handled by the ECF Office so it would be best to contact them and they will sort it out for you. I don't believe the FIDE Handbook is particularly easy to read, particularly for a young person for whom ...

Re: Do I need to be England Federation In Fide to play world youth ?

There will be No fee ? and how can I change it ? I think there is a notification fee of €250. There may be a transfer fee if you have represented your current federation in an official FIDE event and wish to represent your new federation. There is unlikely to be a compensation fee. I have no idea w...

Re: Royalty

Hi. I have translated a chess book. The publisher of the original work demanded me a percent of the sold copies. I gifted some copies and some copies went un-recorded. Do I pay the royalties for them too? I imagine this will be covered in the contract. I would suspect that an author would be entitl...

Re: Server Abuse

I wonder if this is related to the vogue for "trash-talking" mentioned on the other thread. Whist this might be slightly droll the first or second time you hear it, I suspect it may soon cease to amuse. On a wider level, has t'internet allowed intolerance to flourish? I assume it was always there, b...

Re: pulishing a book

Hi. I have done a book translation (with the help from chess players/trainers/masters on this forum and elsewhere) of Play Winning Chess by GM Yasser Seirawan . Now my question is, does my prublication of the translation take a portion of market away from Everyman chess, the publisher of the origin...

I'll have the same please. (No idea who is playing, or given this was on a different thread, whether this was a Two Ronnies style answer to a different question.)
