Re: 46th Berks and Bucks Congress

Ben is correct - this will be our 3rd year in this tournament we wouldn't be playing in it again if there were any issues Neville is an excellent arbiter and Nigel is a very approachable person who has been involved in chess for a long time and never seems to age - will he tell me his secret? John -...

Re: Vote for an ECF logo

Sean is spot on. Sounds like Nero fiddling while Rome burned -nothing new there then :x If there is any spare money, which we are led to believe there isn't then whoever thought up this crazy idea should get off the board now. All members should be consulted as to what they want/think the organisati...

Re: TV at the British

The programme which Jonathan refers to was by the BBC - don't know what happened with this. The filming which took place was by Wall to Wall on behalf of Channel 4. The filming was approved by the ECF and all those playing were made aware that a film crew were on site and filming. Richard - You forg...

Staunton Memorial Dinner

CJ states on the ECF website that "the greatest player of all time will be the guest of honour" and there was me thinking that they were exhuming Bobby Fischer because of a paternity issue :?

Re: Database Upgrade

I am not sure that all the juniors promoted by Leonard as the future of British chess have reached such exalted heights (in chess terms). Leonard tirelessly promoted Peter Williams a few years ago, but apparently now he doesn't make the grade. Similarly, I'm not sure what happened to Kevin Risk or ...

Re: April Finance Council

I have been reading the April Finance Council and CFS threads with great interest and to be honest I am not sure where my response should be posted so have put it here as the most currently active topic. I am a Purchasing Manager and have considerable experience working with companies who produce in...

Re: World Youth Trials 2010

I don't agree. They obviously do want to go to the Europeans/Worlds and why shouldn't they? But they should not have to in your words "jump through hoops" to achieve this, it is frankly an insult to their achievements and ability. Anyone who knows anything about chess knows who our number 1 & 2 best...

Re: World Youth Trials 2010

[quote="Richard Bates If it were a case that the World/European junior is a key path to chess improvement then fair enough, but it isn't - there is plenty of opportunity for parents to lavishly fund chess careers without getting involved in representative tournaments. Richard, I'm trying to think o...

Re: Publicity for COM

One forgets that not all schools play chess and that not all kids go to school - so how are "we" going to cover that or shall "we" just ignore them? :?

Re: World Youth Trials 2010

Robert, If you read the selection policy, there is no mention of any requirement to play in junior events to be invited to the World trial. Yes there is a series of junior events for the John Robinson Grand Prix (for selection to the European Youth). Peter Williams didn't play in any of these event...
