Re: ENG FIDE Ratings must be ECF Members

@harrylamb I would welcome as much information as you have time to share. Thanks for your interest I was worried that I was writing to much. I'm interested if this is a long standing structure? I see the sports affiliation in 2000 - do you know if that was a revolutionary moment? I do not know much...

Re: ENG FIDE Ratings must be ECF Members

In answer to some of the points raised in the discussions between David Robertson and Roger. There are two types of License License A (sportive) For long play events License B (Loisir) for rapidplay and social membership During the last season the FFE issued 54,555 licenses of which 25795 were A lic...

Re: ENG FIDE Ratings must be ECF Members

Chess clubs in country villages with 100 members. How does that work. What makes it tic...? The club is the centre of village life. It organises meals out, barbeques etc. These things that are important to the French. Some of them would not work/happen in the UK. For example its AGM is 10.00am on a...

Re: ENG FIDE Ratings must be ECF Members

Suppose an equivalent to the Junior Squad came along in France, and started to run trips and things. Would they have free rein to do so? You may reply that people don't feel the need to - fine - but what if they did? It would not happen like that. It is one of the points I am trying to make. In Fra...

Re: ENG FIDE Ratings must be ECF Members

I guess ultimately the measure of effectiveness of a chess body is the number of members it has. For a national chess body don't you mean number of players? I would agree with that, but throughout the post I was trying to give numeric measures you that cannot argue over. Number of players you can h...

Re: ENG FIDE Ratings must be ECF Members

If Max and Harry can tell us what we can learn from Norway and France (who both seem more successful than us) then great Sorry it has taken so long for me to pick up Mick's invitation. But I have been working in China for two weeks so this is the first opportunity I have had to respond. The big dif...

Re: ENG FIDE Ratings must be ECF Members

I am a member of a national Federation as per the rules. I am clearly eligible to have a FIDE rating under 13.1 13.2 and 13.3. I'm wondering what the French Federation will make of this. There are players who are affiliates under FFE rules who play all their chess in FFE events but have ENG as thei...

Re: ENG FIDE Ratings must be ECF Members

Take 13.1 To be included in the FRL, a player must be a member of a national chess Federation which is a member of FIDE. Clearly it should read 'To be included in the FRL, a player must be a member of the national chess Federation to which they are assigned in the FIDE Rating List.' The full regula...

Re: ENG FIDE Ratings must be ECF Members

It's not about money, it's about being fair to the vast majority of players, including you, who pay their ECF membership fees because they play in rated events. What absolute rubbish Adam and you know it. It is all about money. It is all about increasing the ECFs income by taking away the FIDE rati...

Re: The Funding of the English Chess Federation vote

The ECF of course has a duty to encourage online chess, it being just another way of playing. It is sad that I have never thought of any way in which this could provide an income stream for the federation. Stewart Reuben Maybe just maybe if the ECF directors considered that their duty was to promot...

Re: Winners and Losers under 'Membership Only'

At the last Financial Meeting I went to, they announced a profit (was it £17,000?) last year. :? I take it that you attended the financial meeting on 16 April 2011. The ECF would have have been hard pushed to announce a profit of £17,000 at that meeting because the financial year does not end unt...

Re: Winners and Losers under 'Membership Only'

Where do you think we get the money? You get it from entry fees, but only from those players who travel to Manchester to play and pay in your event. Most of what you pay goes to running the ECF's office in Battle. So if you, or the players taking part in your event don't pay, someone else has to. I...

Re: Does chess involve to much politics?

I think that you are all taking this too lightly. I think the use of words like tw*t is not acceptable. Especially as the original version had it spelt “properly” without the *. I think that when this was gently pointed out the use of another swear word which has since been moderated out was dis...

Re: PLAYING CONDITIONS - NOT THE WORSE? SURELY?

We have a small local Bolton league. Its purpose is to encourage people to play chess. We do not worry too much about playing conditions. Clubs have regularly played in public bar areas. I used to captain our team and play board one. One club played in the rather busy bar of a cricket club. (To avoi...

Re: Grade please?

Here is an amusing conversation that I overheard at the beginning of a match between my team-mate rated over 200 and a precocious junior. Precocious junior. What’s your grade? Team-mate. I am a person, not a number. Ask me my name. Precocious junior (after five seconds thought). OK but if I ask yo...
