Re: Another Membership Success

France has mandatory membership at a cost of 100 euros I do not think this is true. I have been a member of a French club for about eight years. The current membership fee is 69 Euros. Of that 26 Euros goes to the French Chess Federation 18 Euros goes to Burgundy 25 Euros goes to The club You can s...

Re: April Finance Council meeting

Typical of Council really, dealing in minutiae and not looking at the bigger picture (although in fairness, I have the same problem in the MCF) As a member of the MCF council and a management consultant I have to say that this is typical of all meetings at all levels all over the democratic world. ...

Re: Computer pairings

Surely the pairing algorithm is not so complicated it can't be programmed, is it? I am neutral on this. I run English tournaments where I use manual pairings and play in several continental events which use computer pairings. The answer to your question is that it depends! Computer pairings demand ...

Re: Membership Services

I got the same email as Clive. In my opinion it is spam. I did not ask for it and I do not want it. Furthermore there is no unsubscribe button. Will the ECF please recognise that sending members unwanted emails will alienate its membership further

Re: Repetition Claim at rapidplay

I do not understand all this talk about players needing evidence to support claiming a draw by repetition. I find nowhere in the laws of chess saying that you need any evidence. If you want to claim a draw just go ahead and claim one. Then let the arbiter sort it out. The worst that can happen to yo...

Re: Has a complaint ever been won against the ECF

I don't see what can reasonably be achieved in making a complaint against an organisation that is almost entirely volunteer led. A good complaints system is one of the strongest tools for improving the performance of any organisation. People who complain and have their complaint satisfactory dealt ...

Re: The value of the ECF Calendar

It seems to me that the ECF has a choice. a) To be an organisation which promotes chess b) To be an organisation that only promotes chess that it organises By this decision the ECF board is signalling that it does not intend to be an organisation that promotes chess. It intends to be an organisation...

I realise this is in accordance with the rules. But is it good governance?

Re: Chess in Evening Standard

I was involved with Leipzig chess club for several years. The chess club was part of the Leipzig Vfb football club. By this I mean it did not just rent a room from them it was actually part of the club. The arrangement is not uncommon in Germany. The club was proud of the fact that it was one of the...

Re: ECF Director elections for 2012/13

Hi Martin I would point those interested in facts to the two letters the candidate wrote to the Management Board at the time more or less accepting the points outlined in my earlier post - one of these I believe is available for viewing on the SCCU. You keep saying this but I cannot find the documen...

Re: ECF Director elections for 2012/13

I am not getting at anyone, but I was amused by the closeness in this thread of two comments. I am writing this in the hope that you too will share my amusement and smile. Many might feel that Britain has become too `south centric` 1986 was the first year of the national system and NCCU excepted, se...

Re: ECF Director elections for 2012/13

it's my memory that in the second year of BCF national grading (was it 1985, 1986 or 1987?) that the wheels seriously fell off. I have this recollection of setting the board order for the county team based on results of up to two years earlier because the grades weren't calculated and published unt...

Re: ECF Director elections for 2012/13

In view of Martin Regan's vitriolic attack on Roger Edwards I thought I would see what confirmation I could get of the events he describes using historical records. Below is a list of the officers holding the most senior BCF grading position compiled from the BCF year book. The year given is the tit...
