Re: Compulsory Membership?

There can be tremendous problems this side of the Pennines getting a visa to get into Yorkshire, and even then you can't guarantee your passport will be accepted at the border Even so I find getting a Lancashire visa even harder even though I was born in Lancashire. Often I prefer to get a Yorkshir...

Re: Chessgames of Jan Hein Donner

In the 1950's and 1960's BH Wood/Chess magazine ran a two week chess festival every summer. I think the first few may have been played at Bognor but maybe I am getting confused with a separate event. The event then moved to Whitby and then to Eastbourne. At Eastbourne it was played in the Town Hall....

Re: Compulsory Membership?

Somehow we need to find more effective ways of raising funds. Don't knock it Dave. There is nothing wrong with selling pens, badges and tee-shirts to raise funds. Every pen used means you have a committed supporter. Every badge worn is another committed supporter. As for the power of wearing a tee-...

Its wrong GMCCA did not have a penny when it was formed. I helped fund its first years activities by selling pens badges and teeshirts

Re: ECF Office

But be aware that if you pay the 8 Euro not only will you get a French rating but you are likely to get French nationality! this might be an advatage. There is an irony. Harry the rosbif does want French nationality Ian the Frenchman wants English nationality But the system heavily penalises change.

Re: ECF Office

Our most recent experiences are that a licence has not been expected, given that we are non-residents. If it is we just stump up the €8 It also gets us a French rating, which we would not get without it. I think that if you have a membership card of the ECF with you and that you are not a member ...

Re: 9 move checkmate

I once mated my opponent in six moves on Board 1 of a Bolton League match. My opponent was a respectable 130 player. It must be hard to play a quicker mate than that in a serious match. The game was a Listsin Gambit. On move 5 Black realised I had the twin threats of 6. Bxh7 and 6. Nxh7. His 5th mov...

Re: Cost Efficiency of Corporate Vice-Presidency

I suspect that may be ultra vires...as for our League costs, we are budgetting on the status quo ante I remember Paul affectionately from his days as BCF General secretary. He had a fondness for Latin then. So much so that someone once proposed a resolution along the lines "That the use of Latin be...

Re: Finance Council Meeting

I am glad you think the MCF is successful - given we are solvent, maybe we should launch a takeover bid for the ECF? However, the MCF is a Federation of clubs, whereas the ECF is a more complicated and diverse Federation, and the MCF has a simpler structure: - 1 meeting a year of its members (the A...

Re: Finance Council Meeting

It's just my opinion, of course. Perhaps forum members, particularly those who have experienced an ECF Council meeting, could point me towards an example of a successful organisation or business that operates with a top tier of governance in the form of a group of about 50 people debating and decid...

Re: Finance Council Meeting

In my personal opinion, the ECF Council struggles with this, with the result that "Council business" is defined much too broadly, resulting in ambitions beyond the scope of a half-day meeting. This in turn leads to the need for selection in terms of what is discussed and for how long, and in my exp...

Simple, find another federation.
Simple?? Could you explain this simple procedure to me in 2-3 lines and give an estimate of the cost in transfer fees?

Re: £9 a game? You being funny.

Its unfair, what if i dont want to support my federation because I believe it is corrupt and just want to play chess? Thats the way I feel. For years I refused to be a member of the ECF because of the pathetic leadership of the ECF. Then they took my FIDE rating away even though I had not played a ...

"The ECF doing local accounts"

I have read about the ECF doing its own national accounts on another thread. It does not fill me with confidence.
