Re: Jovanka H. in the Daily Mail

Thanks Alan. In the case of my bank you cannot change it. But I do not have a problem with that as there are other security features you have to go through before accessing the account

Re: Jovanka H. in the Daily Mail

Why do you not just accept the reality of the matter that DoB is used for several banks for security purposes and as such it is a sensible precaution not to give it out. Because I don't believe that is the reality of the matter, having never experienced it with my own bank, who don't use it for pre...

Re: Jovanka H. in the Daily Mail

Alex, Why do you not just accept the reality of the matter that DoB is used for several banks for security purposes and as such it is a sensible precaution not to give it out. This could have happened regardless of your date of birth, though. Maybe maybe not. If I was a 21 year old martial arts expe...

Re: Jovanka H. in the Daily Mail

One of the reasons our game is in decline is the chess playing public’s hatred of publicity. Getting articles like this in a national paper is a milestone. We ought to welcome it and ask for more of it. But no we slag off the newspaper. “There are weeds growing in my garden that command more cre...

Re: Jovanka H. in the Daily Mail

I came up with a unique solution to that problem. Choose a different security question. You're usually given a choice of 3-5. That's not always possible. I do not want to go into details for security reasons. But one major bank gives you an internet ID number based on your DoB. Plus if you go into ...

Re: Jovanka H. in the Daily Mail

It's (ie date of birth) is not a big issue for most people I know. What would be the problem for those who do object? Date of birth is a security question for many bank accounts. For this reason I no longer give out my date of birth. Incidentally I note that FIDE used to give DoB with their grading...

Re: WCCA looking for Professional County Managers

Its very nice of you to do this Charlie but in Greater Manchester I think our current officers are doing an excellent job. I do not believe that parachuting in an outsider will be beneficial.

Re: 99th British #Chess Championships 2012

I support Roger on this. I too would not be a member of the ECF were I not compelled to be. I play half my chess in France and all my FIDE rated chess there. But it did not matter. The ECF took my FIDE rating off me to force me to become and ECF member. Worse still the ECF would still force me to be...

Re: h4

I believe i remember Brett Lund beating Harry Lamb at the Chorley Congress around 1997 with 1. h4 (Sorry Harry) He he, that is a classic. I want to see that game now, should be a bit of a treat. Here is your Christmas treat Joey. Sorry for the slight delay finding the game. But I have been a bit bu...

Re: Outside interference by spectator over players clocks.

Once each player has completed three moves, no claim can be made regarding incorrect piece placement, orientation of the chessboard or clock setting. In case of reverse king and queen placement castling with this king is not allowed. K : d1 , Q : f1 , B : e1 .......... er ? Congratulations Michael....

Re: Outside interference by spectator over players clocks.

Oops How embarrassing.

In my defence it does not say it in the laws of chess which I was quoting from. But as you say it is there in

The FIDE Handbook. Section E.1.01B. Appendix A Rapidplay. Rule A.4a

So perhaps I can be excused

Re: Outside interference by spectator over players clocks.

If it was rapidplay, then the game restarts... but, had three moves each been completed, then the game would continue with the erroneous placement! This happened to an IM in a major rapidplay event whose K and Q were the wrong way around. He had to continue with the wrong arrangement. He couldn't c...

Re: Amusing Pairings

In the very early days of the Manchester congress around 1970. When parings were manual I deliberately paired in a random draw. Mr Black v Mr White Mr Black had White because of his colour sequence. The competitors sussed me out. The result was handed in "Black won" It caused me a lot of trouble fin...

Re: ECF accounts

I echo Alex's McFarlane's concerns. I organise the Manchester weekend congress. Its traditional weekend (for the last two years!) is the first weekend in September. That gives me a dilemma because I believe that the first congresses under the new system will be financial disasters. In my case everyb...

An interesting article. But he may not have thought through one point. He advocates The first suggestion, when putting together a computer, is to have a well-ventilated case. … a couple of large fans to expel air out of the case. This is an important concept to understand in computer cooling. You ...
