Tier 4 visa regulations

I'm probably worrying about nothing, but I had this Guardian piece drawn to my attention at the weekend, the gist of which (though better read the whole thing) is that foreign students [are] being advised that they can no longer compete in amateur sport events beyond those organised by their univers...

Re: World Teams 2019

Is online gambling illegal in this country? No, but deceiving banks as to the purpose of accounts and transactions in order to hide illegal activity may well be. Besides, as I observed last time this came up, when Isai Scheinberg wants to make a public statement explaining why he's on the Isle of M...

Re: World Teams 2019

Re: World Teams 2019

Quite so. In some ways the most important thing is sinply to broach the subject, rather than pretend it doesn't exist. That's been too common a habit in English chess.

Re: World Teams 2019

This case is a bit stranger. Maybe the losing player blundered so early that the captains or players just agreed to draw the other games but yes it does seem more likely that one of the players refused to be involved in a package deal. One thing I don't know is whether the other games were still go...

Barminess in Azerbaijan v Egypt, with three games drawn in 11, 12 and 14 moves respectively - and Guseinov v Fawzy, where Black was already lost by then.
Still puzzled by this

. Hint: if you want to look tall in a photo, get to the front and don't stand next to a tall person. Tom Cruise knows all about this.

Re: World Teams 2019

This result should be on the TV evening national news. Who's the ECF publicity director again? Tim Wall issued a press release yesterday afternoon. The text can be found at https://www.englishchess.org.uk/england-win-silver-in-world-open-team-championships/. Oh, it had somehow escaped me that he ha...

Re: World Teams 2019

Somebody's always out of form though. (In this context I often think of the 2005 Ashes series which England won even though a number of their players barely turned up.)

Re: World Teams 2019

India now seem likely to lose a match they looked like winning a bit earlier, while China need to draw the last game to clinch a win. Would that outcome give them bronze?
