Meanwhile if you believe the Chessbomb computer, Mamedyarov is already in a lot of trouble, although he has only taken a few minutes so for all I know it's a prepared line that comes out all right in the end.

Well asking the young man to play without his hat would seem like an obvious step (not to mention why is anybody wearing a hat indoors in the first place, it's not raining). Best implement this from move one, though, rather than follow Nigel Short's example.
