Re: London Candidates?

I thought it was held at the Riverside Theatre.

Re: Giddiness is a sad malcontent who is a disgrace to chess

I'd leave him to it, to be honest. The only person to whom he brings discredit is himself.

Re: My Resignation

Jonathan Rogers wrote:We now have an interesting "how far is Ray prepared to go" question - and this time it's more difficult than ever before.

Can he really bring himself to tweet "David Pardoe - eloquent writer - straightforward common sense" ?
It's surely hard to imagine Ray doing anything so shameless.

Re: My Resignation

If you are inferring I don't think there was any wrong doing, that is fair. The invited GMs all seem to have maintained goods relations with CJ after the event. I find that persuasive. I don't understand this at all. The problems (alleged, real or potential) don't relate to whether the invited GMs ...

Re: My Resignation

Agreed, but I see this as evidence of inadequate governance processes rather than wrong doing on CJ's part. Well, making that judgement seems to me to depend on our obtaining information which we don't presently have. Which is, of course, in part a problem of inadequate governance. (I meant to writ...

Re: My Resignation

Financial matters are important of course, if CJ has done anything illegal or immoral then I would consider it, at the least, a resigning matter. But if the point is he took full credit for arranging Darwin's sponsorship, when in fact he should only have taken partial credit, I do not consider that...

Which was the issue of New In Chess in which Nigel Short said CJ had "energised" the Federation? In a sense, Nige, in a sense...

Late learners

Insofar as we know, what is the latest in life anybody has learned chess, and gone on to become:

(a) a world-class player?
(b) a grandmaster?
(c) a strong player?
(d) a player of average club strength?

Re: My Resignation

Responding to Steve, who suggest that we should look nicely upon each other because we don't know all the facts and most bad events turn out to be simple cock-ups: generally, perhaps ... but with the ECF, CJ and RDK, if none of us know all the facts, it is because they are being kept from us. For e...

Re: British Championships Tenders sought

Is Phillip Rossiter still playing? I seem to remember that he used to have beautifully written scoresheets even though he was a time trouble addict. My memory also tells me he used long algebraic, but I wouldn't swear to it.

Re: Not playing somebody for a long time

Martin Cath for the first time since 1974(!) .... I've played Martin more times than any other person. Seven or eight times over about ten or twelve years I think. Talking about playing people after long periods of time, I once did the opposite and played the same guy twice in a few days. Once in a...

Giving a helping hand to someone down on their luck has always been one of Ray's characteristics, no? Or part of his modus operandi, if you prefer a less generous interpretation.
