Re: British Blitz Championships

I am assuming that in the earlier stage their names need to be known to the ECF It seems the case that real names and membership codes have to be disclosed to chess.com. That may not mean that chess.com pass them on. I am wondering how the ECF would verify that competitors were members or supporter...

Re: Media comments on chess

The Spanish satirical magazine El Jueves (Thursday) apparently sends on a weekly cartoon newsletter on request. I know this because their director, who draws the newsletter, tweeted to that effect today.

Re: British Blitz Championships

I am assuming that in the earlier stage their names need to be known to the ECF, whereas for the final, they are openly published.

Yeah, but that's not necessarily the problem.

Re: British Blitz Championships

Hard to see how anonymous handles were even allowed for this championship to be honest. Baffles the hell out of me. Somebody must have thought about this, though, because the entry form states: The final stage qualifiers list, draw and results will be published using players’ real names rather than...

Re: British Blitz Championships

Incidentally, another of my opponents - 'Topj' - has now been banned by Chess.com, which hosted the event. They have a very high threshold regarding levels of certainty of cheating, to protect themselves legally. No they don't. They say they do, but experience suggests that they don't, that they ba...

Re: 4NCL Online

Incidentally lichess appears to have just gone down, so that'll be interesting if it happens on Tuesday evening. Also, something happened a bit earlier today that I've heard other people complain about - I moved, the clicks stopped, there was a screenfreeze, and when I was able to get back to the g...

Whether Lichess could reasonably argue that no-one should register under an identifiable name in case they were falsely accused of cheating is a question I'll leave to the lawyers in our midst.
You might recall we touched on this on another thread.

Re: 4NCL Online

In re: disclosure of detection methods, wouldn't the provider have to do this of necessity if ever a case went to court?

(Of course I understand that Plan B in such an instance might be to settle, or fold, before it got to court. But obviously they can't say that, so my question stands.)

Re: 4NCL Online

At the very least, not being allowed to know the charges against you is a very basic denial of natural justice.

It's also, as far as I can see, unprecedented in our field. Who was ever thrown out of a chess tournament for cheating and nobody told them what they were supposed to have done?

Re: 4NCL Online

RE: your case with chess.com Justin I think it's less that their detection methods are bad, and more of a case of them having an insufficient review process and poor customer service I think you're probably mostly right, though do bear in mind the point about "excluding opening moves", where you do...

Excluding opening moves
Although as we have discovered, this doesn't necessarily happen and certainly not very well

chess.com have been honing their cheat detection for many years
Although some observers would use other terms than "honing"
