Re: Leicester Congress (H E Atkins Memorial) : 30 Sept - 2 O
Yes, I'd probably be eligible to play footie for 3 or 4 of the former republics if I was good enough. However, I'll only play under the English flag, being born & bred. If other players want to play in a FIDE rated event and don't fancy paying £27 they now know of a nice little loophole: pretend yo...

Re: Leicester Congress (H E Atkins Memorial) : 30 Sept - 2 O
Thanks Jack. I just fancied entering a local congress, playing a few games, and later having a few beers with mates who have entered (various sections) but the only section I'm eligible for is the open and it's a bit frustrating to find I can't enter without being an ECF member. Oh well.

Is membership of the ECF compulsory to enter a FIDE rated event, or only if you want your games FIDE rated? A couple of weeks ago I considered entering Leicester but was put off by the fact that the open is FIDE rated. Have I misunderstood the entry requirements?

Re: Summary of Funding Proposals for AGM
Oops, I stand corrected about the vote. My apologies. Extract from the minutes on the GM on 23rd May: "The President called for a straw poll. This resulted in 11 votes broadly in favour of a membership scheme, 3 votes preferring the status quo, and 6 votes undecided or awaiting more detailed proposa...

Re: Summary of Funding Proposals for AGM
Ian Kingston isn't 100% right. Nottinghamshire hasn't made a decision. At our AGM last July the majority view in a 'straw poll' (as described by our Assoc Sec) was to wait until the final proposals were published (a few people were against the proposal and a slightly larger number were in favour). H...

Re: Rules about drinking alcohol before or during matches
I wouldn't join a club located in a dry venue. Chess is something I can do while drinking! Gambit had to change venue in February; we moved to a real ale pub near the city centre. There has been a marked increase in attendence on club nights compared to our previous venue, with a 100% increase this ...

Re: Minutes from Birmingham League meetings last night
Hi Alex, The first league I played in was the Derby & District Chess League in the late 70s where all games were played to a quickplay finish, and still are. When I moved to Nottingham in the late 80s I was surprised to see some games ended in this strange thing called adjudication where someone els...
