Re: EU referendum aftermath

Ed Miliband is backing Smith for leader. Maybe significant, given that he is one of the relatively few "establishment" Labour figures who a lot of left leaning members might listen to.    Meanwhile, America are reminding us that, yes, it could be a lot worse! Maybe 8 years of h...

Re: EU referendum aftermath

Regardless of whether you supported or opposed the UK leaving the EU, it's important to remember that in 1993 we were denied a referendum on the Maastrict treaty, which paved the path to political union. That was a major mistake by, er, Major. We have had to wait 23 very long years before finally be...

Re: MCCU AGM Sat 25 June 2016

Mick, thank you for your best wishes but whoever told you that has got his facts wrong.

I didn't attend the meeting but have been informed by the MCCU CEO Ray Dolan that Andrew Davies from Staffs was elected in place of David Levens.

Re: Adjourned Games

Chris, I honestly can't answer your question. I just play naturally quickly. Probably explains why I'm a lowly 150 :) I'm not exactly known for deep analysis (my team mates say I spend as much time during a league match watching the adjacent boards as I do looking at my own) but at least once or twi...

Re: Adjourned Games

It is a philosophical point as to whether speeding up play towards the end of a game is acceptable or not. We really need to stop this myth that quick play finishes automatically mean players have to speed up play towards the end of the game. This usually only happens when players don't manage thei...

Re: Player of the Year

Maybe, but the point I'm making is that it was Roger who initiated the discussion by creating that thread, alerting me and others to a policy that many had not been aware of, and, as a result of further postings by other people, Mike made his helpful comments.

Re: Player of the Year

Please no! He's far too valuable as an independent voice. We wouldn't want him to be compromised by 'collective responsibility'. Seriously though, setting aside his tendency to go off on one of his hobby horses, many people who read the forum value Roger's contributions as they learn as much (probab...

Re: Arbiters (jobs for) proposal.

I've just read the ECF Competition Rules within the 'Grading' Tab on the ECF website. Nowhere does it say that any arbiter must be present at a congress. It doesn't even mention the word 'congress'. Therefore, as far as I can see, there is no such policy, unless someone knows different. Also, there ...

Re: Arbiters (jobs for) proposal.

Can someone please clarify whether to remain a L1 I would have to actually arbit at two different congresses? It's not clear from the document. I don't agree that it should be a formal requirement to have an ECF arbiter on a league management committee / disputes committee. My local LMC has been per...

Re: Secret Cunning Plan To beat Yorkshire: CC Implications

Can anyone explain why the rules restrict players to playing for just one county during a season? Each section is effectively a completely separate competition. For example, I don't see why I (currently 153) should not be allowed to play for the Notts U160 and the Derbys Open team, if it had one, in...

Re: Trying to renew membership

Only a third of my club will renew directly and the rest will get their bronze level membership via the county as Nottinghamshire is a MO; this will probably happen at the end of this month after our treasurer has received all the relevant information from the clubs. If you check the ECF membership ...

Re: Trying to renew membership

I sympathise with Steve. When you first reach the site, you have to click on one of the renewal options, so I chose '3 year silver'. When you get to the members details page, the viewing form shows the one year option instead, which cannot be changed. It's only when you get to the payment page that ...

Re: League Management Software

The Croydon League results screen is what I was looking for - thanks. I very much like the 'player' feature.

I guess it would be quite a task for a national LMS to incorporate all the features everyone wanted but the idea is an interesting one.

Re: League Management Software

As a team captain, and a former league secretary who manually compiled the fixtures 9 times for the Nottinghamshire league (which by the way does not have any divisional grading limits and has no restrictions on board order apart from eligibility rules (apart from one occasion, you must play on the ...
