Re: Nominations for the elections at the ECF AGM

Sean, I think that's an unfair question because, as Angus says, that's between him and his organisation. What I would like to know is why do congress organisers get a vote? They don't represent anyone at all. For example, who do you consult before casting your Atkins vote and your e2e4 votes? I've p...

Re: REGULATIONS ON REGISTRATION & LICENSING OF PLAYERS

There's a very distinctive 3rd set of player: Those, probably the majority of us, who don't give a stuff about FIDE ratings. I didn't enter e2e4 Nottingham Major because it was a FIDE rated event, but despite it being one. I entered because it was a local tournament and I fancied playing and meeting...

Re: Does your play improve with alcohol consumption?

Yes!

Some years back David Levens called me a 'pub player' - I regard that as a compliment!

Hey John, we could fix it so that we play against each other when Gambit 1 plays Gambit 2 in 3 weeks time; how about 1/2 pint every time a piece is taken?

Re: Membership renewals

Based on my experience, no doubt the next sequence of events will be for your name to disappear entirely from the membership list tomorrow, only to reappear on Thursday.

...but it is not as though the higher rated (adult) player has any proper business playing in the British at all What on earth is that supposed to mean? I don't know the player Jonathan is referring to, but if he's qualified for the British then he's perfectly entitled to play, regardless of his gr...

Re: Lazy questions

It's not really surprising why the u100 section has seen so many defaults. The 'u100' section is too low since the grades were 'upgraded'. The regular players who used to be graded u100 are now graded 100+ and the current <100 grade adult players are those who used to be graded <70 so are likely to ...

Re: What is the optimum frequency for grading lists?

I prefer the annual intervals. Most players just play league chess plus maybe one or two chess congresses, so for them an annual grade makes sense and keeps things nice and simple. I fully understand that FIDE need to update more regularly (as they do in Tennis etc) but the ECF grade is more relevan...

Re: League Champions!

Congratulations to Geoff for his efforts to get rid of adjudication. I've never understood why anyone thinks it's ok for someone else to decide who should win a game. With quickplay finishes, at least you know that only you and your opponent have been responsible for the result of your game. I manag...

Re: Outcome of membership scheme

Even at Bronze this is £13 for one county game then £28 for following year Are they really trying to extract a little more blood from the stone or is it just the usual ill-conceived planning to discourage casual players from joining up ? Hi Kev, You played 4 games for Grantham in the Notts league...

Re: Attention Congress Players

I don't know about that: If 50 players entered one section, 30 paying the lower fee and not playing for prizes, and the other 20 paid extra and played for the dosh, would that not be equivalent to tournament A using option 1 getting 30 entrants and tournament B with a higher entry fee getting 20 pla...

Re: new ratings out now....

Sheffield was a bit extreme last June when it used the Aug 2011 grades rather than the Jan 2012 grades.

It meant I had to face Farshad Ai in the final round of the u171. He won.

I hope they get it right this year.

Re: Attention Congress Players

and his Boddingtons! The Derby Assembley Rooms' profits fell sharply when the Midlands Open stopped. When I turn up for round one I like to think that, come the last round, I might still be in with a chance of winning some dosh (to pay for Keith's Boddingtons), even if it's a grading prize, so optio...

Re: Outcome of membership scheme

Apologies to the Blackpool organisers, if I'm maligning them, but I suspect congresses use this device to increase revenue as many players forget to claim the refund. If there were no laminated cards, they'd have to find another wheeze. There are no cards for those joining through an MO. They can e...

Re: Yorkshire vs ECF disparity

For this season only, couldn't the ECF treat the non-registered leagues as 'abroad' and agree to grade any games played in them by ECF members? It certainly could, but why should non-registered leagues be given favourable treatment over registered leagues? They won't be. The compromise for this sea...

Re: Yorkshire vs ECF disparity

The biggest unknown factor at the moment is what the member/ non member split in Yorkshire will be at the end of the season and, consequently, what the liabilities will be for each league (it may be a substantial amount, it may be relatively little). There are two issues here: 1. The Yorkshire leag...
