Re: Covid-19 - Suspend Chess Immediately

Turning briefly to other sports, football (like other sports, including cricket and golf and tennis and others) has suspended its program of activities , notably going against the current government advice. The problem is that the outbreak is expected to be at its peak in May and June so if the susp...

Re: World Senior Team Championships, Prague, March 2020

I suppose the question should be asked: in such circumstances, would FIDE award seven-round title norms? The answer can be found in 1.41b. [Why do I increasingly find myself quoting people who provide cryptic comments or links?] https://handbook.fide.com/chapter/B01Regulations2017 1.4 The GM, IM, W...

Re: World Senior Team Championships, Prague, March 2020

Quoting in full (from the official FIDE Twitter account): In connection with the coronavirus crisis and the new preventive measures adopted by the government of the Czech Republic, we have to call an early end to the World Senior Team Championship: a winner will be declared after the 7th round, curr...

Re: World Senior Team Championships, Prague, March 2020

How many rounds left? The BBC live news feed just reported this update from the Czechs: Czechs famously like to appear stoical in the face of adversity, but the state of emergency declared by the government on Thursday afternoon is draconian in the extreme. To limit the spread of Covid-19, the exist...

Re: Coronavirus leading to cancellation?

Bad Wiessee has just been cancelled; and I have received a refund, but no explanation, from St Albans, so I am guessing it has been cancelled too. Just to put things in perspective: According to the World Health Organisation, flu kills 290,000 to 650,000 people a year worldwide. The coronavirus has...

Is it the same Alfred Brodie? And what do you think about the Edward Shirley Kennedy dates and whether that is the right person?

Thanks for the update, Stewart. Any news on whether other teams have been affected by withdrawals related to the coronavirus situation?

Re: Young Ukraine chess couple 'killed by laughing gas'

Very sad. This should really also be in obituaries, as he was a 27-year-old 2552-rated grandmaster, see his FIDE rating card: Bogdanovich, Stanislav (born 1993) - with his most recent results on the rating site being in the Aeroflot Open 2020 B in February (though other results may still be pending)...

Re: Chess history trivia

No-one has answered John's question, so I'll go ahead: Lionel Kieseritzky died in 1853 Elijah Williams died in 1854 József Szén died in 1857 The substitute English players are not well known, but Alfred Brodie may have died in 1857 at the age of 47 if you believe what has been posted at chessgames.c...

Re: Coronavirus leading to cancellation?

Talking about this last night, it was pointed out that the absolutely key thing is to wash hands before and after certain activities (e.g. eating food), and to not touch your face (mouth, nose, eyes) in between washing hands if you have been touching or handling items that might harbour the virus (s...

Re: Candidates Tournament 2020

There is more at those links. Radjabov said: It is not correct, I have no personal reasons to withdraw from the tournament. I will come up very soon with the statement and with letters that were sent to FIDE and their answers. And from Wang Hao: I believe that all the big events (not just chess) sho...

Re: Chess history trivia

To make it more fun, who was the last surviving player from that famous 1851 tournament (at least one player survived into the 20th century and was only 22 at the time of the tournament)? And how many of those players were born in the 18th century? The one that died soon after was Kieseritzky, who d...
