Re: e2e4 Uxbridge International : 11th - 15th August 2010

For IM norms as you need a performance over 2450, it shouldn't really matter what the score is required as it is all relative as you normally required to get 2 or 3 good results against the titled players in any tournament and then don't bugger it up against the weaker players Well, I would have th...

Re: Karpov FIDE presidential campaign

Hi Chris, Federations don't vote, FIDE Delegates do. They vote for Kirsan because they expect to personally gain from his reappointment. However, I think regardless of what Federations or Delegates have said at the moment Kirsan is far from home and dry. There are two important points to bear in mi...

Re: Bobby Fischer

No respect for the dead. But Mr Fischer will live for quite a while in our hearts. Yeah, but I still wonder where the money came from. What did he get for winning the World Championship? Oh, doh! It would be the money from the rematch with Spassky. The money the US are trying to claw back and which...

Re: Twitter Feed

However, does this "Twitter Feed" mean that anything I post on the Forum will automatically appear somewhere else as well, whether I like it or not? If so, is that really appropriate? I have similar concerns (and yes, I think posting this does mean my name will appear on Twitter - oh noes!! )

Re: Is it rude / insulting not to resign?

Double knight mates are my favourite. I've felt cheated not once, but twice, by players resigning the move before I could deliver one of these mates (more games :D) You do like quoting games, don't you? :) Maybe this forum should have a games viewer! I could then dig deep into my pile of old games ...

DNA test 'proves Fischer not girl's father'

Wonder who gets the money now?

"His estate is estimated at $2m (£1.4m)."

Does anyone know where his money came from?

Re: Is it rude / insulting not to resign?

I think this is a very interesting topic also. I've sometimes managed to turn games around, even against strong opposition (and had it done to me in return) in serious events, so there is an argument for playing on even in some hopeless looking situations. Consider the following examples from my ow...

Chess tourism

Inspired by some of the places mentioned in the chess cafe thread, I thought I'd ask what places there are in Britain and abroad that could be part of a chess tourism trail? By this I mean permanent establishments (such as cafes and chess clubs) rather than tournaments, and actual landmarks such as ...

Re: Chess Cafe Culture

When I lived in New York in the 1960s there were, I think, 7 different chess 'salons' where one could play chess. There were also a number of coffee shops in Greenwich Village. Virtually all have disappeared. Presumably one can still play at Marshall Club, in Central Park and on Washington Square. ...

There was an earlier thread on this, albeit not particularly recent. http://www.ecforum.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=1502 However impressive Karpov's website and platform may be, he has one major problem: Ilyumzhinov is claiming victory. http://www.onefide.com/ At the Press Conference in London on 8...

Re: e2e4 Uxbridge International : 11th - 15th August 2010

The norm info is actually on the event website http://www.e2e4.org.uk/entrants_int.htm Some of the lower rated players "just" needed 6.5 by virtue of them playing a higher average. Ah, yes, the norm requirements *were* on the website. Thanks for pointing that out, and apologies to Sean for ever dou...

Thanks (and hi, Matt!). Is there such a thing as an FM/WFM norm? Or do you only need rating and this £80 now to be an FM?

Re: Tactical improvement

A friend of mine at Cowley Chess Club had been an average club player (graded between 110 and 130) for twenty years until I told him about the Chess Tactics Server. He worked on that for just ten minutes a day for six months, and the very next season his grade shot up to 170. Now I regret telling h...

Re: e2e4 Uxbridge International : 11th - 15th August 2010

I can't find any details of what the norm requirements were in the Masters A and B sections, which is slightly strange as when you have an all-play-all, you can calculate that before the tournament starts. I've no doubt that the information will have been made available to the players at the event....
