Re: Checkmate Covid-19

There's now live coverage for the whole 24 hours with lots of different players streaming their games. I'm not sure this is a complete list, perhaps more can be added when found! https://twitter.com/ecfchess/status/1264117125171511297 All but Matthew and Natasha are streaming on twitch so to view th...

Checkmate Covid-19

There doesn't seem to be a thread for this excellent event yet. It's a 24-hour event hosted on Chess.com - details can be found at: https://www.englishchess.org.uk/checkma ... red-cross/

Re: coronavirus leading to cancellation?

It seems sensible for leagues/events to encourage players who are ill to self-isolate/not turn up by relaxing rules on defaults (ie not enforcing penalty points for leagues) and refunding players who pull out of tournaments due to sickness. Obviously you could have players abusing this and claiming ...

Re: World Youth Championships

Black can resign for many reasons. One win is 32.Rb8+ Rf8 33.Rxf8+ Kxf8 34.Qh8+ and taking on h7, but you're right that 32.Qb8+ is stronger: if Rf8 then 33.Qc7 wins and if 32...Kg7 then 33.Be5+ Kg6 34.Qg8+

Re: World Youth Championships

Matt, you said earlier "I think when the Allan Pleasants game arrives it will be fairly eye opening." and " His win over Allan Pleasants was an engine-like destruction apparently." To me, that looks like a good attacking game, but nothing particularly spectacular (Allan playing 23...Bxe5 looks like...

Re: British Knock out 2019

He seems to be giving a good account of himself so far at least. I wonder if moving very fast vs everyone means he's less likely to get nervous? He must be full of confidence from yesterday.

Re: Shortest game

I played in a thematic tournament at Hastings Chess Club back in about 2000. The first round was From's Gambit and the pre-decided moves were: 1.f4 e5 2.dxe5 d6 3.exd6 Bxd6 4.Nf3 g5. Before the games started there was some joking around that there were at least a couple of options to avoid, but one ...

Re: 22th European Team Chess Championship 2019

It really does. Very solid from Mickey, and Gawain seems to have spotted a trick, negating some of the technicalities of the endgame!

Re: 22th European Team Chess Championship 2019

Looks like an impressive team performance vs Sweden. It's just a shame the time-scrambles/games in general are less fun to watch with the delay.

Re: FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament 2019 - Isle of Man

I'm not sure that's 100% foolproof as it's White that has to organise the exchange. I'll predict a draw anyway, but very happy to be shown otherwise!

It's now a draw by the looks of things, but probably not an easy draw...

Re: FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament 2019 - Isle of Man

Think Luke's got it now (after 52.Qg5!) - which would make him outright leader! (Edit: Though not quite as over as it would've been after 53.Nc1, fingers crossed)

Re: FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament 2019 - Isle of Man

On a happier note let's see in Luke can convert his excellent game - early days but he looks back in great form!

Seems pretty inappropriate language to me. I'm sure he'll be bitterly disappointed but still.
