Re: Batumi Olympiad

Not unsurprising perhaps but quite reasonable overall.

Re: Batumi Olympiad

It may seem trite to say that England beat everyone they might have expected to beat, drew the match that was most likley to be drawn, and lost to the better teams. But the point can be stretched further - assuming that Gawain survives today, in not a single one of their matches will both sides hav...

Re: Batumi Olympiad

Some positions are more level than others! Plenty of play left in Fressinet-Kramnik, I wouldn't be surprised at all if once side was in trouble at move 40!

Re: Batumi Olympiad

28.Bd1!? a visually appealing move in David's game. Certainly more so than the risky looking 28.hxg4 which I'd be surprised if was played. 28.Bb3 another (more) likely option...

Re: Batumi Olympiad

Perhaps it's worth pointing out the reason 28.Qa1+ was more accurate is that Black cannot reply with Qe5 due to 29.Nxd6! (the Queen on a1 cover e1).

Re: Batumi Olympiad

Nakamura-Bu appears to be the decider for the Open, and it's going to be a tight and nervy affair. Hikaru has not won since round 1(!) remember.

Re: Batumi Olympiad

Mickey now a clear pawn ahead and England on course for an excellent finish - but with the time controls approaching we've seen twists and turns before...

Re: Batumi Olympiad

Russia looking good against France as Bacrot has collapsed under pressure. I don't expect Russia to lose a game and Vitiugov is also somewhat better. That game transposed into a French and I've found the resulting middlegame very uncomfortable for Black in practice!

Re: Batumi Olympiad

My approach would be before the round to input likely results (just as you would in the final weeks of the Premier League for example). Just assume the favourites win their matches then see who the tiebreaks favour. Then you can just check for upset results! I agree it's a very tough job but I'd wan...

Re: Batumi Olympiad

Is it possible to be entirely accurate? No! But surely it's possible to have a better answer when a player asks than 'absolutely no idea' - even if the answer is in fact 'too close to call'.

Re: Batumi Olympiad

Back on England watch and David has a very comfortable position, with the other 3 pretty close to equal. I wonder if Luke will start to press with Black - not easy to see how but he does like to try!

Re: Batumi Olympiad

I'd be surprised if the team captains of the leading teams weren't tasked with keeping at least some eye on tiebreaks. I assume they could take that into account when instructing players on draws? Is that actually practical given the complexity of the tie-break? Vaguely? You know what the relative ...
