Re: ECF Finance meeting 2018

Don't sell the family silver to pay the bills, as Harold Macmillan would have said. On the other hand, if there are bequests that were clearly intended to be spent on chess, then there is no reason for them not to be spent on chess. Well yes, but my point (and Graham B's and Macmillan's) was that c...

Re: New Idea for Caro-Kann players

I mean, if you want to convince me that 7...e5 is playable based on that game, there's the small matter that Shankland flattened it...

Re: ECF Finance meeting 2018

Seriously? Here's a simple solution. At the next such event just cull the bottom 25% of male students. Job done. I said that, didn't I :P At the last Chess Academy weekend there was 20% female students. The aim is to get this to 25%. The statistician in me would like to know whether that's 25% of t...

I think the general view is that major investment would be such a purpose, whereas using reserves to cover a planned operating deficit is not advisable.

Mental Health and 5-aside chess: Small board, big impact https://bristolchesstimes.com/2018/04/19/mental-health-and-5-aside-chess-a-small-board-with-a-big-impact/ Can I suggest an improvement to 5-a-side chess? Black gets draw odds. I've thrown some pieces around on a 5x6 board, and I think White h...

Re: ECF Finance meeting 2018

This proved contentious, despite a jovial remark that the effective increase for current bronze members was £4 – roughly a pint of beer – I was reminded by a member of the Board that if the £1 price increase in Item 6 caused anguish, then this would be 4 times the anguish… Sorites paradox . When do...

Re: Revised Papers

I'll throw another thing into the mix. Malcolm's position on ECF governance has always been slightly unclear but the general impression is that he wants a strong international body; supported by private investment as much as possible. It would certainly be unfair to paint him as seeking to rake in ...

Re: ECF Finance meeting 2018

I'll throw something else into the mix. The ECF ultimately aren't responsible for the `product`. Is your club/ league welcoming and forward looking or does it just tick along amateurishly in a dingy pub function room? Give players a better incentive to come along and they'll be more willing to meet...

Re: ECF Finance meeting 2018

Malcolm is treating the ECF Council with a certain amount of contempt in electing not to attend. It is after all an increase in funding for the International budget that is being sought. For that matter it's apparently not an issue for him to seek endorsement from his home federation of standing on...

Re: ECF Finance meeting 2018

This thread is largely four people nitpicking and needling at the ECF; as proven by the fact that all four commented in succession after my previous post. I'm laying down a mitten here (rather than a gauntlet) but last night I supported at a new junior club while running my own for older students t...

Re: ECF Finance meeting 2018

I was thinking particularly about the comments Harriet and Andrew made about the lack of support for top players. Top players will construe anything short of a full-time salary as a lack of support. Complaints are inevitable. But it's fundamentally an amateur game. We should de flate the profession...

Re: ECF Finance meeting 2018

Regardless of the merits of any given individual, the organisation is bigger than any indivdual within it and could survive the absence of any individual within it. And any organisation of which this is not true is an organisation with a very big problem. I'll need a sit down and a cup of tea after...

Re: ECF Finance meeting 2018

they could pack council with individuals mandated to vote it out. Really though? They could organise that nationwide effort in the 3 weeks between the budget being announced and the meeting? Look at it this way: let's say you were deciding on this year's International budget, and you wanted to incr...

Re: ECF Finance meeting 2018

I expect the Budget will be approved without difficuly, because it usually is. Council members are right to feel that it is dangerous to fiddle around in a large meeting with a construct that has been painstakingly created from many moving parts. Dangerous why? Council can strike out any item of sp...
