Re: setting up a Social Chess club

Well now, if we knew the answer to that we'd be millionaires. I've bought this book . I shall read it and tell you the answer soon. If you're going to ask the ECF for £5,000, be sure to include the words "feminist", "diverse" and "central" in your proposal. They don't have to mean anything, they ju...

Re: Cheating in chess

Nonsense. Sure, there's no smoke without fire, just string her up. I do find it interesting that there have been no such remarks about her from the US, even though she played in the Millennials Match and scored 4/4. You're doing that thing chess players do where everything is zero-sum, black and wh...

Re: Cheating in chess

It wasn't necessarily a false accusation, it was an unsubstantiated accusation. Proving any accusation false is a greater undertaking than proving it true. An unsubstantiated public accusation should be considered false until proved true, or at least highly plausible. This one comes nowhere close. ...

I think the penalties for false accusations should be more clearly defined by this point as it is clearly going to be a continuing issue.

Re: Cheating in chess

Here's another one. Ethics Commission has delivered a light punishment to a Russian GM who has made unsubstantiated accusations on the Internet against a young female player. He has received support from a group of GMs - mostly from Eastern Europe, of course, but it is disappointing to see Jacob Aa...

Re: Elite Chess League

"E-sport" is a little different than simply "online". But Greg Shahade's PRO Chess League has esport-ified chess already. You can't treat chess as expansion-pack-able. The basic gameplay mechanics of chess are chess's greatest asset. They're the one aspect of chess that doesn't need selling. If you'...

Re: Not pressing the clock

He was even more unimpressed by his loss on time to an 11-year-old after he (Nigel) forgot to press his clock... Something of a modern trend perhaps, that younger players appear trained to sit with a poker face when their opponent has failed to press the clock. Do we really have anything to back up...

To clarify this, I meant in terms of appearance on the scene (ie Short predates Adams by being slightly older).
True, but David Howell post-dates Adams by a considerable time...

Of course, if more people got involved rather than simply writing on forums ... You'll see upthread, Alex H asked me whether I'd still like to be involved and I said yes. (I haven't heard from him again.) If more people thought about the processes they were following and how to explain them and mak...

No, but what is?
Funding from sponsorship, as per election promises. That sounded very good.
Or funding from the government. Or funding from spectators. Or voluntary funding from members. Or funding from invested reserves.

So basically, anything at all other than the current arrangement.

And at the end of the day, you want to ask: do we really want a situation where practically everybody else is sending a team, but we're just peering in through the window with no team to support inside? You're a marketing exec at heart, Justin. "Think of how bad you'd feel if you didn't have this t...

Re: ECF Finance meeting 2018

I played in a tournament with 55,000 other kids in 2001. How many are still playing today? That's the nature of the demographic problem, that from the mid 1960s or earlier up to about the mid 1990s there was a steady stream of new players in the 15-25 age range, after which it dried up. They don't ...
