Re: Div 3 North 2016-17

Indeed Loz..... and I don't suppose that cross pairing up the `odd balls` from each round would work either...??
ie, the `spare` in league `A` plays the `spare` in league `B`...

Re: Div 3 North 2016-17

With 18 teams you might split them into two `all play all` sections of 9 teams... then finish with a three round conventional Swiss. It should be fine provided the seedings are reasonably OK, and the split is fairly balanced....and should give all teams a fairly even range of competition. Remember.....

Re: The Death of League Chess?

Thanks for your comments John... As I said earlier, league chess is far from dead... many see it as the main bread and butter option for chess, and it has plenty to offer the aspiring new generation of chess enthusiasts... I can see your point, but like your venue in stockport is very hard to get t...

Re: Div 3 North 2016-17

18 is impressive and makes the swiss a little easier An even number is good too It makes the Swiss easier than 16 teams. However it will still mean that by the late rounds teams at the top will be meeting teams at the bottom; my view is that this will lead to some pretty unedifying chess. I`m not s...

Re: Div 3 North 2016-17

Hopefully No 17 will be Broadlands... that would add some spice to the top order. And if an 18th member can come forward to join the party, all the better..!! It maybe Broadland, but according the the 4NCL website, their top board last year is looking for a team; so maybe not or weaker team Shame t...

Re: Crewe 14-16 October 2016

IOM ..maybe. plus Harrogate (which is this w/e...!! ) And notes to main league websites in Staffordshire, Shropshire, Derbs, Merseyside, Yorks, GMan and othe...

Re: The Death of League Chess?

Joey.. My suggested changes (just above), refer to the normal evening leagues, to counter the lottery pot luck effects of the current blitz finishes.. They would pretty much guarantee that over 97% of games finished in one session, and that only a small handful of games would run to a second session...

Re: Div 3 North 2016-17

Hopefully some teams can muster a bit more support and enter at least one or more teams.. Cheddleton.... surely they can do it....even with a weaker team, it would still be good match experience. Same goes for SOA... a third team from them would be great and help to liven up proceedings...if not, an...

Re: The Death of League Chess?

The title of this thread is somewhat curious...? Is not the 4NCL a league....and surely not dead. Maybe in need of a lick of paint, or a few tweeks and upgrades/enhancements.. So too, the more basic traditional formats, which provide hours of `entertainment and challenge` for our players. Yes, I`m s...

Re: The Death of League Chess?

I notice that Manchester lost its long standing webmaster in July.. Not sure who the new organiser is, but there doesn't seem to be much news coming through the website just now.. I presume that normal contacts with clubs and secretaries/league captains has continued. I know of at least one club tha...

Re: Is there any code of conduct for the Players laid out by the ECF?

The guidelines are there.... players should at all times act in a reasonable and good sporting manner. Question is... what if they don't...and it happens. Take a league match situation.. you`re half way through the game, running down on the clock. The game is entering a tricky phase. Your opponent t...

Re: Div 3 North 2016-17

Thanks Mike... your comments are noted.. The challenges of the chess world...and trying to please chess players..?!? If we could encourage greater room take-up and greater use of the hotel facilities.. meals, drinks etc., then our value to these hotels might improve.. What numbers are we talking her...

Re: County Chess vs 4NCL

Joey, You have been around the county scene for a while, doing good deeds, and flying the flag for Warks.. Yes, you`re right to say that county chess has its challenges.. as does many of the other `flavours`. Not least, because of competing needs on our time. Today, for instance, I went to see the M...
