Re: Another new IM

Draw this evening with GM Epishin won't harm Jackson's cause. He may be there now - or does he need to be 2400+ at the end of the event, or on the May list?

Re: World Senior Team Championships Rhodes 2019

Round 1 in the 50+; top four matches: Scotland v USA; Armenia v Ireland; Germany Women v Iceland; England 1 v Oslo In the 65+ with 27 teams they have given the bye to 17th seed Belgium, which is unusual; maybe one of their team is late arriving. England 1 v Sweden 3 should be one-sided. The team num...

Re: FIDE Senior Championships 2019

...There are some errors in the round 7 totals given in Tim's summary for the round 8 pairings. Yes I was just copying the figures given in chess24 which still seem to be wrong for some players at present. In the last round Terry has drawn and Keith won but the site is showing their totals out of 8.

Re: FIDE Senior Championships 2019

Terry Chapman lost in round 6 (to Milos Pavlovic), but in round 7 he is one of a group of 5 on 4.5/6, half a point behind his conqueror who is the new leader. Keith Arkell in a group of 6 on 4/6. Round 7 is later today. Terry playing Fabio Bruno. Unfortunately Terry lost again; two Blacks in a row ...

Re: US Championship 2019

Ah yes, I had forgotten 2015. That was when Wesley had a melt-down with one of his losses being an arbiter ruling for note-taking,

Probably Wesley was lost somewhere near the end of yesterday's game but the online engines may be wrong,

Re: US Championship 2019

Three sharing the lead in Open (Dominguez, Nakamura, Caruana).
Robson got crushed by Gareyev and Wesley So could be going down. Sevian wlll be up to fourth if that happens.
Has Wesley So ever lost a game in the US Championship?

Re: HISTORY OF THE LAWS OF CHESS

I doubt that anything posted by Bill Wall can be "valuable" historically and I advise you never to cite him in your book. He has got the stuff about 1883 mostly right, probably from reading the 1957 BCM 1957 article on 75 Years of chess timing, which I cite in my Blackburne book and you should find ...

Thanks for that link but as it's WikipedIa, treat with caution. Note that it does not clarify the Anton/ Parligras situation mentioned above.

Re: HISTORY OF THE LAWS OF CHESS

I had looked up Golombek's History and, indeed, Kevin O'Connell's note says that, in 1861 for the Andersson-Kolisch match in London, they timed the game by using an hour glass for EACH player. The time limit was 24 moves in 2 hours. The London 1862 tournament used the same system. Independent clock...

Re: Rediscovered game by De la Bourdonnais

Harding's claim that the game was played by Labourdonnais is still on-line (http://www.chessmail.com/research/Historic-games.html). The page above is not linked to either from Tim's home page, or even his research page under which it is found in the link above. It would be difficult for anyone to c...

Re: US Championship 2019

Well, well, well. There were many times this evening when I thought I would have to take back my words about Gareyev. He even got R v R+B for the second time, after Caruana (who was a little worse for ages) missed a win at move 66. (Caruana actually had played very Magnus-like in the spell from his ...

Re: US Championship 2019

Gareyev may be a world record blindfold player and clever tactician but he's otherwise a glorified coffee house hacker as Nakamura demonstrated with simple effectiveness, avoiding any theory discussion, and just eating pawns whenever offered. it's a mystery to me how Gareyev gets into the US Champio...

Re: Division Two 2018-19

If last weekend's results are anything to go by, with all the teams from Pool B winning in round 8, at least three of them will get promoted. Sussex Martlets carry no wins forward from Pool B so they might offer a glimmer of hope to Spirit of Atticus? I like to see veterans succeed so I hope they ma...

Re: Division One 2018-19

In view of the announcement about visas for sporting students (discussed in the Tier 4 visa regulations thread under General Chat) I imagine that Hou Yifan would be ill advised to allow herself to be recruited by any 4NCL team, whatever the inducement? I'm not sure that I see why. What is the worst...
