Re: ECF Website

If there is anything readers would like me to raise at the meeting, I will happily do so on their behalf. Adam try getting any answers regarding CFS then, current state of play, number of sets distributed so far, plan for the July 2010 initial deadline, etc. I was told nobody was allowed to comment...

Re: ECF Website

I would like to make it crystal clear that the ECF Office staff would very much like to engage with their customers (on this forum) but are forbidden to do so as the result of a board level decision. I think this decision was made more to avoid awkward questions regarding CFS as I do know comments ...

Re: The Process of Adjudication

Many many years ago I played Peter Gibbs at correspondence chess and I know he is good player and a throughly decent guy. I'm sure Peter will do a very diligent job on adjudications. However, this topic was started by Martin Benjamin who described himself as "not a complete patzer" because he was o...

Re: The Process of Adjudication

That is why I don't agree with adjudications at all, and I only tolerate adjournments from afar. I am surprised that so many leagues still consider adjournments the norm. Of course I would always defend the right of leagues to organise matches as they think is appropriate for their membership, but ...

Re: The Process of Adjudication

If you search the ECF website you will see that the ECF adjudicators are listed as Peter Clarke, Peter Gibbs, Peter Griffiths, Paul Littlewood, Ken Neat & Jonathan Penrose Some of these are not particularly strong players, so I would imagine that they would rely fairly heavily on computer analysis....

Re: The Process of Adjudication

I will admit to having been asked to adjudicate a position in the past. The material was uneven and looked like it would resolve itself into an ending. I looked at it for a reasonable time, and even put the position into Fritz, and came to the conclusion that the game was a draw. Then there was an a...

Re: Mobile Phone problems at local league level.

I wonder; is it ok for me to use a laptop with a wireless connection whilst I am playing my game to receive important emails, and have a chat with my friends - not about my game, of course... actually I don't mean a laptop, that would be daft - I meant a Blackberry... or would an iPhone be acceptable?

Re: Mobile Phone problems at local league level.

During one British my opponent took two consecutive 40-minute ponders. I went for a swim during the second one. May I just say that I admire your relaxed approach to the game? There is nothing more invigorating than a good swim and a quick tumble down the flume to break the tedium of another Exchan...

Re: Mobile Phone problems at local league level.

Last night I played another match and one of the opposing team took a loud call on his mobile at about move 11 - we claimed the game. Of course we could have decided to give him a warning, but we didn't. Our player could have chosen to waive the penalty, but in this circumstance I might have steppe...

Re: Mobile Phone problems at local league level.

Is it not the case that part of the reason why mobile phones are so disruptive is because we have such a draconian rule against them? Whenever a mobile phone goes off during a game, half the room seems to turn towards the offender because they know that they are likely to be defaulted. I would argu...

Re: Mobile Phone problems at local league level.

I don't like this rule. Mobile phones appear to me to be a matter of etiquette, rather than something we need a separate law for. However, now we have a law governing the use of mobile phones, we have to deal with it. The law, as I understand it, was created in order to stop players cheating with el...
