Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

What is the experience of flying at the moment? Are there empty seats / to enable social distancing? Lots of bargain flights online, which makes me pause for thought...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

Is it easier to stay in Europe and keep travelling than to return to the UK and risk being quarantined on the way in/out?

Re: Cheater or not - what do you think?

Are we clearly naming a junior again despite my suggestions? I believe the references are to tournaments run last weekend where the play of the 7/7 winner of the B section is being queried. The results of the tournament seem to have been suppressed. they are not, in any sense, suppressed however yo...

Re: Cheating in chess

Wadih, great posts. Thanks for the info. I like the combination of screenshare, webcam and pgn review. I think this would significantly reduce the level of opportunist cheating. What does the arbiter see on the Zoom screen in this instance? I am currently running a congress with 40 players and it's...

Re: Cheating in chess

Which engine did you select? Did you leave the program to run and not run any other software each time? It's running stockfish_20011801_x64. No, I don't have a computer dedicated to running PGNSpy. It's not doing anything else that should be significant, just web browsing and e-mail. I've changed t...

Re: Cheating in chess

Might be to do with your processor. How many lost positions were there? None on either run. I'm rapidly losing all confidence in this program. Three runs now and the third one has given a significantly different result on one measure: Run 1 - T1 - 9/15 moves Run 2 - T1 - 8/14 moves Run 3 - T1 - 5/1...

Re: Cheating in chess

Clearly, depending on the type of game, there may be no obvious 'engine move', or series of engines moves, but the totality might be beyond most amateur players (so I would have definitely stumbled at some point). For what it's worth PGNSpy reports that there were 20 or 21 positions where the resul...

Re: Cheating in chess

please take advantage of pgnspy to conduct your own research, using a sample of all the games (5 or 6) from a tournament and compare that with a control sample from a reliable top level event over the board. This will give you a feeling for what is normal and what is not, and often my instincts abou...

Re: Could Hybrid events save English chess?

I have agreed an event on 12 Sept at Golders Green, provisionally. Here are my thoughts; Your temperature will be taken at the door, no entry if you have an elevated temperature wearing masks at the board will be compulsory, so please wear them on entering the venue maximum 80 players (usually 160) ...

Re: Cheating in chess

It is also, I would hope, obvious to most people that the level of proof you could reasonably demand to quietly deny someone a prize/placing in a specific tournament is quite a lot lower than that you'd need to make a public assertion that they did use an engine If a tournament withholds a prize wh...

Re: Cheating in chess

Actually, I never use the ch... word if I can avoid it. I have seen too many false accusations, and it is ugly. I don't think naming people is appropriate because you can say they are guilty of breaking some rules, but technically they are innocent until proven guilty. Making accusations about peop...

Re: Cheating in chess

Uh huh. Are you under the impression that the sole responsibility for defamation on the internet lies with the poster? No. I think it depends on the forum and whether they are deemed to be a "publisher". What is your impression? The legal definition includes forums like this one, but FB has wriggle...
