Chess on the canals

I recently spent some time on a narrowboat, and whilst trying not to fall in the canal I wondered if there were other chess players out there interested in 'cruising the cut'? I have seen all sorts of businesses out there on boats, including bookshops and restaurants - and it struck me (of course) t...

Re: July 2019 grades......

Oops, the Surrey foul up is down to me - unaccountably I used a different event code in January to the one I normally use. Are you supposed to use the same event code, for the league results, but increment the submission number by one? That way you can submit the same file, but only the new games a...

Re: Muswell Hill FIDE Daytime rapid is back!

Great practice for the British Championships! http://muswellhillchess.blogspot.com/ Here are the dates for the rest of 2019 for your diary (all Tuesdays); the venue is a lovely pub called The Clissold Arms - https://clissoldarms.co.uk/ and it's got plenty of room for non-players. We have three secti...

Re: FIDE's 400pt rule

However, one surely has to question the legality of having a camera installed in the bathroom? I wonder what they've done with footage of other patrons who were using the facility for its legitimate purpose. Makes you wonder. Such scruples aside, I'm glad they got him. It isn't easy. they obviously...

Re: Chess Podcast

Just be careful of any background music - as I discovered, YouTube has bots that pick up on anything that is copyright and the lawyers are onto you in a flash!

Has anyone heard of kaoori.co.uk?

I am considering buying some products from kaoori.co.uk - but I have never heard of them before, though they are apparently based in Covent Garden. Anyone else here bought anything from them?

Golders Green FIDE rapid is on this Saturday 13th July. If you haven't seen our lovely new venue check out Brendan O'Gorman's photographs of the recent SCCU Team Rapid; https://brendanogorman.smugmug.com/Chess/SCCULondon-Clubs-Team-Rapidplay-2019/ and marvel at the stained glass windows whilst you s...

Re: FIDE's 400pt rule

A certain GM of my acquaintance played in a series of open blitz tournaments I organised, with the avowed intention of pushing his blitz rating up high enough to qualify for a major FIDE event. He gained very little in each event, even having to score 6/6 to do that. I quite admired him, because he ...

Re: Quit Stallin'

I have a massive collection of 2000 chess books which I am gradually trying to sell. Part of the problem is that the market for second hand chess books is on eBay where collectors hang out - not necessarily amongst dedicated chess tournament players. Even finding space at my tournaments for a bookst...

The chequered chessboard is a medieval European invention and its orientation a convention.
Is this true? So many arabic manuscripts feature the chequered board, and conventionally orientated - occasionally you get a board with no colours at all, just grid lines.
