Re: Cheating in chess

Uh huh. Are you under the impression that the sole responsibility for defamation on the internet lies with the poster? No. I think it depends on the forum and whether they are deemed to be a "publisher". What is your impression? The legal definition includes forums like this one, but FB has wriggle...

Re: Cheating in chess

Making accusations about people on a Forum is different to withholding prizes, or deleting results, refusing entries or closing accounts. You are definitely on dodgy ground as a publisher and that means Carl. On your point about making accusations on a forum, it is a matter for debate among the Twi...

Re: Cheating in chess

I get why, say, the 4NCL doesn't want to publish the names So do I in one sense - they don't want to deal with the agro of claims and counterclaims. However, given the high rate of cheating in the online format, I believe publishing a list of names is necessary to give those who played fairly confi...

Re: Cheating in chess

I dont really believe in naming or shaming. Especially kids. Why? In many ways I consider the kids victims of this issue, but I appreciate many would not agree. Young people are more susceptible to being persuaded into using assistance. I don't think the stigma should stay with them, they need a wa...

Re: Cheating in chess

Why would anyone mind naming names? It's not an accusation, it's just a statement of fact. Joe Bloggs enters tournament under stated conditions, they were then removed from tournament after the server closed their account. Just to clarify. I think that the server flags the account, the actual closu...

Re: Cheating in chess

I don't think there's any good solution to this other than the return to OTB chess. But is it already too late? If the cream of our young players were forming the view that competitive chess is just a nest of rattlesnakes and better avoided altogether, could you blame them? I know. It's quite a cha...

Re: Cheating in chess

"But I was in the room with them all the time, and they only had access to one device! They couldn't have had assistance !"

The kids know way more about technology than we sometimes give them credit for and at a far younger age.

Re: Cheating in chess

I agree with Richard. Dont make assumptions based on your predjudices or one or two games, download all their games from the event and run them through pgnspy. I did look at the games using the lichess engine and that hinted at which accounts might be flagged. Pgnspy does all the analytical work for...

Re: Cheating in chess

The bottom line is - it is easy to catch people who use assistance, especially online. What we need to work out is how to dissuade players, usually young players, from using assistance. This should be a priority for the ECF and for all of us, not least because chess may remain online for a long whil...

Re: Cheating in chess

Where is the empirical evidence for this? Yesterday's UK Chess Challenge Gigafinal (the first of two) run on Lichess has already labelled one highly-ranked competitor in each of the Under 12 Boys, Under 12 Girls and Under 14s as "This account violated the Lichess terms of Service". None are so labe...

This shouldn't be such a problem though? Its another reasons why you wait for a half decent sample of games before doing anything.

Re: Don’t cancel your chess congress - hold it online!

You need more information before making an assessment (time control, rating of the player, av rating of the opposition, etc) you can email me if you wish), but you should download the games of all the players and run pgnspy. Then compare this players results to those who finished second or third. If...
