Re: The most ridiculous article ever published by the Guardi

All the lunatics I have met are not exactly safe without guns. However there are many responsible gun users. The gun is not the danger - any weapon in the wrong hands can be lethal - how many deaths by taser?

Re: The most ridiculous article ever published by the Guardi

Is it assumed that all gun owners are complete nutters but non firearms enthusiasts are sane upstanding sane citizens?

Re: British Chess Championship VAT added

2. The only time a poker player will say poker is a game of luck, is in conversation with the tax man.
I like it - however we poker players didn't get consulted on the tax status of the game :D .

Re: British Chess Championship VAT added

Personally I think alcohol is far more of an evil than gambling. I have never seen a sober gambler so intoxicated that he kills a person when driving under the influence of a deck of cards. Poker players do not beat up their wives due to drunken aggression. Alcohol costs the NHS far more money in po...

Re: British Chess Championship VAT added

Gambling is no worse a vice then alcohol. Sensible people don't gamble money they can't afford and responsible drinkers know when to stop. The biggest vice is intolerance Alan I have seen strong players leave pieces en prise. Calculating odds is not the only skill in poker. You also need to read the ...

Re: British Chess Championship VAT added

Alan I can't quite agree because if a piece is left undefended though for example a momentary distraction - it is not necessarily lack of skill. Also with poker a hand between two players might result in the victory going to the under dog who clings to his cards without caring to calculate his outs....

Re: British Chess Championship VAT added

Sean I understand what you are saying but Stuart was talking as though he is surprised that poker is not subject to tax. Gambling is relying on luck - poker does require skill but alas luck does play a part in it. Although if I wished to be pedantic I could argue that chess also has an element of lu...

Re: British Chess Championship VAT added

Furthermore VAT is not payable with poker and neither is income tax levied on winning. This is because poker players are considered to be gambling with their money. Monies which are gambled cannot be subjected to tax without the proviso of the player reclaiming tax and VAT for gambling losses and ex...

Re: British Chess Championship VAT added

Although the ECF has to pay VAT on the entry fees to the British Championships I have been told that the overall effect on the finances is rather small as we are able to reclaim vattable expenses. The most obvious of which is the hotel bill for the admin team. This makes the comment by Louise Sincl...

Re: British Chess Championship VAT added

This sounds like a nice little earner for the government. I won't be recommending Game Fee to NCCL and I have an idea the entry forms for the championship have been disposed of in the appropriate fashion.

Re: British Chess Championship VAT added

Presumably this isn't the only situation where the ECF levies VAT. What happens with the Game Fee?

British Chess Championship VAT added

I received a few entry forms from the British Chess Championship to display at the Sam Black Blitz (shameless plug) and I looked through the form. I was surprised to see that VAT is levied on the entry fees - is this a new development.Titled players get discounts and free entry so it would appear th...

Re: Poker's faces: Are the British about to invade?

Poker is great. I still play an occasional game of bitz chess but prefer poker. I haven't done badly from it. As for young people and gambling my brother was 13 when he backed Ben Nevis in the Grand National and he rarely gambles these days.

I don't think diabetes causes poor personal hygiene. I met Bruce myself and he had an advanced case of body odour due to not using soap and water. However he was an interesting character although we disagreed about womens chess.
