With less than a fortnight to go before the Olympiad, the England delegation has 5/13 visas.

Re: 87th FIDE Congress; FIDE's financial situation

Nick, there were, in fact, dozens of delegates fooled by Kirsan's phoney offer. I heard several of them discussing it, with admiration, in the bus going back to the hotel. Not Makropoulos, of course, who correctly described it as "bull**it" and the contemptible cynics like yourself who had already d...

Re: 87th FIDE Congress; FIDE's financial situation

And the delusional Kirsan Ilyumzhinov deserves to be taken seriously, does he? How pathetic. If you knew the first thing about Rex Sinquefield and the incredible support that the richest man in the State of Missouri gives to the game of chess, you would know that he honours his promises.

That does seem to have been the general view.

Re: 87th FIDE Congress; FIDE's financial situation

Why not ask Kirsan to pay the $20 million he promised? Bermuda turned down $10 million of hard cash from Rex Sinquefield in favour of the Deluded Kalmuck's pie-in-the-sky. How about that for gross irresponsibility?

Re: 87th FIDE Congress; FIDE's financial situation

Itwebia Chess OU, based in Estonia, appears to be George Mastrokoukos - the lackey of Yiorgos Makropoulos. Over 30,000 euros of unbudgeted expenditure there. How convenient.

Re: Bandar Anzali, Iran

It should be noted that Iran has just won the World Under 16 Youth Olympiad, crushing Russia along the way. Three of the team, including their superstar, Parham Maghsoodloo, went straight from Anzali to Slovakia.

Re: Bandar Anzali, Iran

Finished with 8.5/10 - a 2790 performance - collecting 14.2 rating points. I am writing this from Imam Khomeini Airport. I can't wait to leave. It was an absolutely knackering experience.

Re: Bandar Anzali, Iran

Some kind Iranian installed some software which enables me to bypass the censorship. Unfortunately it makes an already slow Internet connection even slower. I can't always get online.

4.5/5 so far. But after seeing my son's terrified messages from Istanbul Airport, this all seems pretty pointless...

Re: Bandar Anzali, Iran

Thank you Leonard. To be honest, I would be happier with a much larger cushion, though. Knowing that just one bad move will ensure that you are sent scurrying from the exalted top 100 list is not exactly comforting. Talking of bad moves: yesterday's game against the 12 year old (!!) Iranian Champion...

Re: Bandar Anzali, Iran

I have 2.5/3 after beating Mousavi (2432) yesterday. The 16 year-old, Maghsoodloo, who I barely survived against in the first round, beat Mchedlishvili and Edouard in the following rounds, so he is more than on track for a GM norm - although who cares about that these days? Our team is so far export...

Re: Bandar Anzali, Iran

I forgot to mention that, at the opening ceremony, Kirsan announced that FIDE would look favourably on Iran hosting the Olympiad. Forget about the Israelis (I am sure Vice President Gelfer can be persuaded to support the measure) or the gross indignity of forcing hundreds of women to wear the hijab ...
