Re: Title norms held by English players

Given that these days there are 1,500 or so GMs and 3,500 or so IMs, I think it's fair to say that by present-day standards more or less literally every historical English player we've ever heard of was of IM strength or more. As for Jonathan Penrose, in a proper world slaughtering the reigning worl...

Re: London Chess Classic 2013

I suspect if Petrosian and Smyslov and that lot had played rapid events we'd have seen plenty of blunders just like the ones here.

Anand, on the basis of his higher rating?!

Re: London Chess Classic 2013

It's not really surprising when they've had to play four days in a row already and in any event are substantially the weaker player in two-thirds of their games. As a player I'm finding it more frustrating that some disgusting twerp on the board next to me was chewing gum loudly for the whole game y...

Re: GM Killers

Didn't Kramnik rack up quite a few at one time, for instance?!

Re: London Chess Classic 2013

By the way, it’s really no concern of mine, but I do think this tie-break sucks. At least make it a blitz play-off between qualifiers. Anyone of my strength who had made it to 4/4 would have had to beat two or even three 2550+ GMs, whereas Istratescu hasn’t had to play any, by virtue of being to...

Re: London Chess Classic 2013

Well, on the theme of hard luck stories, I had agreed with my wife before starting to take a half-point bye in round four in order to wait in this afternoon for some tradesman who no doubt won’t appear, and having mislaid my mobile phone, didn’t receive her messages and Sean’s offering to canc...

Re: GM Killers

23 is nothing, if we’re counting present or future. I haven’t counted but I’m quite certain I could beat that myself and even more certain anyone my age who hasn’t has a 20-year career break could do. What you need is to have been a junior the same age as, or preferably just a bit older than...

Anyhow - the King is dead, long live the King 8)
Chessbase think he was winning with 43(?) Nd2 instead of Nd6.

Re: Anand v Carlsen

After all, it's not *that* difficult a line. The delightful Trent/Sachdev duo have it on their board without benefit of computer, and if they can do it, I'm thinking Magnus can.

Re: Anand v Carlsen

Actually that might well be right, that according to the tablebase it's a draw. I wouldn't put much on Anand's chance of holding it in practice though. Most players would, fo' sure, but Magnus isn't most players. I'd be surprised if he doesn't go for it. If he's going to do some kind of casual risk ...

Re: Anand v Carlsen

I'm not sure I would either; as far as the site computer and the commentators can tell me, Nh5 here wins. Although it does kinda sacrifice a piece; it's not surprising Carlsen's giving it a good long look.

Re: Anand v Carlsen

I think it's clear Magnus intends to win this ending if he can; that's why no draws are getting offered. And no doubt Anand is equally determined not to lose; in a non-competitively-relevant sort of way, I fancy we'll see quite a keen struggle.

Re: Anand v Carlsen

Think exd6 might have been Carlsen's Larry Holmes moment.
