Re: Anand v Carlsen

Yes, I know. But I don't really recognise your description of the game. Still, whatever.

Re: Anand v Carlsen

Oh, OK. You confused me by saying it was the most impressive game and then saying Carlsen did nothing stunning, and then saying that all the action was in the rook ending, when Anand put himself on the brink by playing the wrong moves before that stage.

Re: Anand v Carlsen

[ Carlsen didn't do anything stunning in game 5, he just showed that he has studied rook and pawn endings more deeply than Anand and can play them out to the finish without blundering. If you mean game 6, then I assure you that you're mistaken. Not one grandmaster in a hundred would have come up wi...

Re: Anand v Carlsen

Matt, I think Graham is pointing out that your proposed alternative to Qg4+ and perpetual, namely 'trying to win' with ...Qf5, would in fact fail to Ng7xf5. Fantastic position in Ian K's Stockfish line; Black's a whole piece up but can only move the queen, and I guess White has a fortress, in effect...

Re: Anand v Carlsen

After Nxh5 in Graham's line I guess Black can play ...Qd7; Ng7 Qg4, can he? Anand apparently said in the press conference he 'got excited' when he saw Nf1, with the idea of ..Qd1; Rh4 Qh5 and now Ne3. I don't really understand a word of that, but apparently the engines show some 20-move draw after B...

Re: The World Championship Draws - The Cure is Money

Watching on You Tube ... one couldn't help but be influenced the flood of negative comments What always impresses me about youtube is the flood of racist abuse below every pop video. It's probably easiest just to assume that anyone posting on youtube is a retard and take it from there. As for 'ther...

Re: European Club Cup

That's a real shame if true. One of the biggest attractions of the EEC from the punter's point of view was precisely the mismatches in the first round. Terry Chapman came very close indeed to downing Efimenko this time, and I loved playing Dominguez (and would have loved playing Svidler even more if...

Obviously. 'With all due respect' is what lawyers say when they mean 'now listen to me, you stupid ****'. I thought everyone knew that.

[quote="Mats Winther I would also win against Anand if he, for no reason at all, sacrifices a pawn in an equal ending against me.
M. Winther[/quote]

No you wouldn't. With all due respect, you're deluded and know nothing about the game.

Re: Anand v Carlsen

It seems to me that this was an opportunity he won’t get again; after 1…c5 it’s quite hard for White to avoid a fight, I’d have thought. There’s 3 Bb5+, I suppose, but even then you can play 3…Nd7 AFAIK. I’d have more faith in a kitchen-sink-in-game-9 strategy if I had any idea how tha...

Re: Anand v Carlsen

This sort of thing’s fine for surviving against Carlsen or anybody else, but it’s not going to retain the title. I know all about recovering your balance after two losses, and so on, but there simply isn’t time for it. It’s not as though the Najdorf or Kan are some wild gambles, and it’s V...

Re: Anand v Carlsen

I feel sad for people like Mats who apparently cannot understand the breathtaking brilliance of Carlsen's play in these sort of positions. Do you? I don't. I find them tiresome bores and I wish they'd go away and follow wrestling or stock car racing or something, certainly, but I can't say I feel s...

Re: Anand v Carlsen

Yes, that's true; we were talking about this at the weekend; in these positions Carlsen's not a machine, he's much better than that. OK then, get a second to play against you using the machine.

Re: Anand v Carlsen

The European was also decided on R&P -v- R in a sense, since Radjabov won one in an earlier round which won the match for Azerbaijan. That was drawn too, so much so that even superannuated IMs knew the right move blindfold, which was more than the 2600 GM playing Black could manage. It was along the...
