Re: ECF Elections - Statement by Malcolm Pein

Maybe so, but the fact is there wasn't one, and that Malcolm was only willing to devote so much time and (for hugely understandable reasons) wasn't prepared to attend board meetings (do most non-executive directors do so? I wouldn't have expected it myself). The members had to take a decision in tho...

Re: ECF Elections - Statement by Malcolm Pein

For the love of God, will some of you people just try to get the faintest semblance of a grip? If we lived in any kind of sensible world, all the people who voted for ‘none of the above’ in preference to Malcolm would be rounded up and banned en masse from any kind of work with chess players, ch...

Re: 4NCL RAPIDPLAY CHAMPIONSHIPS

Am I the only one who can't make the live games work properly on the website? I get Display 1 and Display 2, each of which has eight games in from about round four, and that's it.

Re: Proposed abolition of Quick Play finishes

I've no idea what most of those abbreviations mean, but anyone who thinks that 'members of the chess public' support the zero tolerance rule by a margin of 70 to 40 and that this is evidenced by a vote of people attending any sort of FIDE meeting in Dresden is in need of help. (That's not quite what...

Re: Tactics practice

Is it? I'm too idle to give it more than a couple of seconds' consideration, obviously, but how do I put Black to the sword after 1 Rxf6+ gxf6 2 Bh5+ Kg8 3 Qg3+ Qg7? I can take on c3, I suppose, but that's not mate.

Re: ABERYSTWYTH 2014 BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIPS

No idea about the venue but your bus pass definitely won’t work. Welcome to devolution.

Mind you, by the same token all the English venues are unsuitable in this way for Welsh OAPs, I guess.

Re: Chess-playing MP?

The Conservative MP Jesse Norman played in the British U-18 in 1979 and was quite a useful player in his youth - graded somewhere around 180, at a guess. I don't know how much he's played since, but he, I and Will Watson beat the GMs two years running at the London Chess Classic dinner, though of co...

Re: Happy birthday....

I always wondered why Leonard hadn't received an OBE. Having looked at his Wikipedia entry, now I know.

Re: 2013 British Chess Championships (Torquay)

Ah, thanks. ...Bc8 does look a bit snappier, somehow, doesn't it? One for Jonathan's TISE series, presumably - at least I suppose White's playing dxe4 after ...e4, isn't he? Aha - Nigel S - that accounts for it. He's always had a bee in his bonnet on this matter since his absurd behaviour at the Isl...

Re: 2013 British Chess Championships (Torquay)

So is Howell-Jones so far an exact rerun of Gordon-Palliser? I can't be bothered to check, but it has very familiar contours. I'm not sure why Black plays this stuff. White just looks a bit better to me.

Re: 2013 British Chess Championships (Torquay)

Well, I shall replace the chapeau I doffed a few rounds ago to Jean-Luc Weller. Really, a junior gets the opportunity to play a GM and what does he do - he plays 7 dxe5. >It is unfortunate but let's not forget that it was the ECF's FIDE delegate who got this rule put in place Let's not. And now that...

Re: 2013 British Chess Championships (Torquay)

Chris Ward was apparently +4 for a large portion of that game, up to +5.6 when he played 36.Qc1?? - a perfect illustration of how meaningless computer evaluations are in a practical game. Or alternatively that no matter how good your position may be it is still usually possible to lose it by blunde...

What's Steven G up to? That b-pawn is looking pretty mean. And axb6 is only a draw, I think?

That does seem to leave Black better, doesn't it? Wonder if the moves are right.
