Re: New chess league for London

First meet up of the Wanderers today. Good turnout, good beer and terrible chess (from me at least). Look forward to a fun season! Thanks James and all who came, well worth doing!

Re: Does publishing games give anyone an advantage?

To be honest, to me a chess player is a chess player - whether 7 or 107 given the starting position they have the same chance of winning. I really don't see why a junior should be treated differently to any other player - and if they play at a publishable standard then they get published. Anyway, as...

But surely the problem here wasn't that they were playing a 1700, but that the 1700 was playing at 2200+ (for whatever reason)?

Re: BRITISH CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS - THE GAMES

Ah, now I know why Short-Adams was recorded as 0-1. Heh, I didn't realise that Rendle and Eggleston are ex-Warwick people. So am I - we should all party I know :). We've got Khandelwal in there too. And Nick Pert, and Richard Bates http://www.sunion.warwick.ac.uk/chess/PLAYERS/rec-9899.html (quite ...

Re: Going to the wrong venue for a game

I once typed in the wrong postcode to the satnav and turned up at my captain's house instead of the venue. Was too late to correct my error so I just turned round and went home...

Re: Honorary Doctorates

What kind of jobs in finance? I can't say that I've ever been interested in that and as such, I think I'd probably find it quite difficult to convince a prospective employer otherwise. The only related thing that I'm vaguely interested in is actuarial stuff, mainly due to the type of work (at least...

Re: Name that tactic?

Thanks David, it didn't feel to me that it quite belongs to any of the "standard" tactical themes - back rank mate doesn't come into it until a bit later on, and there's a bit of simplification going on in there (to help make the queen look even more out of place stuck on h2!) Yes it was played alth...

Name that tactic?

Just finished off an adjourned game which involved an interesting tactic: [Event "Stevenage 1 vs Letchworth 1"] [Site "Stevenage"] [Date "2011.05.16"] [Round "?"] [White "Chris Majer"] [Black "Matthew Fletcher"] 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 c5 4.c3 Nc6 5.Nf3 Qb6 6.Bd3 cxd4 7.cxd4 Bd7 8.O-O Nxd4 9.Nxd4 Qxd4 ...

Re: The 40 point Rule

Is it definitely graded? Not all Club Championships are. It's difficult to say given you're ungraded, because it is subject to my first answer. Thanks Alex - yes, I'm pretty sure my club championship is graded. I also think Ian's link tells me roughly what I wanted to know on how my grade will be c...

Re: The 40 point Rule

I do have a query that's tangentially related to the original question. I don't have a grade at the moment as I haven't played for a few years. My grading performance is about 180 over the 15 games I've played this season. Presumably this (roughly speaking) will be my grade when the list comes out? ...

Re: Probabilities of White - Black split

Thanks Rob. Is the 1 in 16 (16%) figure for exactly 18/12 & 12/18 split or 'at least' 18/12 & 12/18. i.e. would it include 19/11 and 20/10 ... 29/1 and 30/0 etc. To follow up on this, I make the probability of a split of colours that is at 18/12 or more extreme (ie including 19/11 and so on) to be ...

Re: How to improve?

Apologies for the double post but I felt it warranted a second one. I've looked over game 2 as well - the end was pretty messy! In my view, you played well up to about move 28 - Rd5 instead of Qc2 looks pretty unpleasant for Black. My only significant comment is that 12. b3 seems a bit aimless? One ...

Re: How to improve?

Hi there Nicky, I've been lurking on here a while but this is my first post. I've also had a look through that first game, and there are definitely tactics around moves 13 and 14 - have a good look through and let us know what you find! By move 17 you're a solid pawn down (although I always feel tha...
