Re: ECF grades compared with FIDE ratings
Happy to do a bit more analysis now I've got the dataset together if anyone's interested. The "new" URS ratings still have limited credibility, but how does the ECF to URS conversion look? Apart from some seemingly spurious data every player with an active FIDE rating has a URS rating and vice-vers...

Re: ECF grades compared with FIDE ratings
This has cropped up in another thread. Would an update be possible? I ask that with no idea of how much work is involved. I've downloaded the FIDE February 2017 list and compared to ECF January 2017. I can't remember exactly what I did last time so just matched up all people with ENG, SCO, WLS nati...

Re: ECF grades compared with FIDE ratings
The best fit line across all these data points is FIDE = 7.4 x ECF + 690 - alternatively (with rounder numbers) 7.5 x ECF + 675. This has cropped up in another thread. Would an update be possible? I ask that with no idea of how much work is involved. I've downloaded the FIDE February 2017 list and ...

Re: WORLD RAPID & BLITZ CH - DOHA 2016
I just tried to find Nakamura-Grischuk on the livestream and ended up watching bits of the prizegiving instead. It is quite funny to watch. Ivanchuk clearly doesn't like being showered with glitter and confetti at the end. (Round 19 is from 2:57:30 on the 4 hour+ clip for rounds 13-21 of the ...

Re: WORLD RAPID & BLITZ CH - DOHA 2016
Any good visual bits from the livestream footage? Here's Karjakin dropping his Queen vs Nakamura in round 15 https://twitter.com/FollowChessApp/status/814820795524546560 And a couple of good grabs from Olimpiu Urcan: Jobava can't believe he lost from a winning position against Carlsen https://twitt...

Re: WORLD RAPID & BLITZ CH - DOHA 2016
And at the other end of the table, a fantastically consistent performance from Mohammed Ali Dima, scoring 0/15 in the Rapid and 0/21 in the Blitz . Can't have been easy for him to turn up each round, especially as he was dispatched by the 'lesser' players in rounds 4-6 in the rapid and 5-7 in the bl...

Re: London Classic Grand Tour
The video on chess24 (which I was watching live) shows clearly that only after 57...Nd8 Nakamura suddenly saw the stalemate resource which Kramnik must have spotted several moves earlier. Nakamura is not able to do oriental inscrutability and his expressions were a marvel to behold. Kramnik said he...

Re: Size of chess audience
Interesting figures - it's almost as if the 'hundreds of millions' was a slight overestimate... As it hasn't yet been mentioned, I just went into lichess to look at their numbers and there are around 7000 users currently logged in. I'm sure I've seen low- 5 figures there before. (I appreciate it's a...

Chess24 have won the lawsuit relating to their Candidates coverage, and will be covering the World Championship. Gustafsson and Svidler top the list of commentators:
