Some more games
I'm quite pleased with both of these. Re: July 2014 gradings out
I went up two points, getting ever closer to my goal of 100. I had a good season this year (even if my results show two wins and four losses. Two of those losses were good games), so I'm pleased with that.

Re: Uncommon openings and accepting a draw when you're winni
Yes, both sections are still going and the Championship is the top section. This year, we have 27 players across all sections.

Re: Uncommon openings and accepting a draw when you're winni
The final position was after 31. Qf1. I think both of us missed the mate after 30. Kg2 Re2+ and I've just seen one line now. I already am at the bottom of the class, compared with most here (grade-wise, anyway) :D. Also, I don't face the English regularly either :). Actually, I've had White in most ...

It really isn't that bad. The bus doesn't take that long to get there from Coventry station.Reg Clucas wrote:I'm sure someone will complain it's too remote.
I'm going to try and make it to the event next year. It's convenient and is the place where I got my first taste of competitive chess

Re: Some recent games
Does 1. d4 count as an "early d4"? I thought about switching (back) to that, but I'm not sure whether that's the best choice, or if I should play the Spanish, Scotch or something else. 1. d4 is a different type of game. Long, long ago I switched from 1. e4 to 1. d4 for the first time. What struck m...

Re: Some recent games
But whenever you set up a position with a Bishop on c4 and a pawn on e4 defended by pieces, .. Nxe4 is always possible, so should be analysed if you want to anticipate your opponent's moves. Main Line Four Knights is to play Bb5 or d4 at move 4. Noted, thanks. Having played through the game, isn't ...

Some recent games
A good game against a much stronger opponent. I was pleased with this one, despite losing on time and also missing the fact that Black has 4. Bc4 Nxe4. My opponent thankfully missed it too! Perhaps the Four Knights took him by surprise. [White "N. Chorley"] [Black "K. Jones"] [Result "0-1"] 1. e4 e5...

Re: Come on! A game from the Metropolitan internal
Is the point of Bxh7 to try and expose the king, or is there more to it? After I got the piece trapped, that was my line of thought when taking there; I thought I might be able to use that hole later on. A brief look at the guide to the French on the chessKIDS website suggests Bxh7 is a common theme...

Re: Come on! A game from the Metropolitan internal
Maybe he just wanted to transpose to a French to confuse me; I dunno as I hadn't seen him play or anything beforehand. I think I'd have been OK playing a Caro-Kann, h4 and all. Yeah, I saw that he couldn't play Nd3, which was why I played c3 instead of a3 :D. Also, to Paul, yeah, I even thought abou...

Come on! A game from the Metropolitan internal
I know all the attention is on the British right now, but I thought I'd share this game nonetheless. I've not done any analysis, as I only played this evening, but am happy to report I won :D. That gives me a score of 2/4 so far (2 draws, 1 win, 1 loss) with 2 games to go. Enjoy! 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.N...

At least my rapid grade went up. Approximately half-way to my 100 target for January.
