Re: Fritz/Chessbase on Linux

Hi Niall, I've not actually played on FICS for a while, but I imagine the game should be there in "clipbase" (i.e. the clipboard database), so you can go back through it at your leisure. This is certainly the case when observing a game, as I've just tried. Yes, you can get opening books with Scid (s...

Re: Fritz/Chessbase on Linux

If you play on FICS, Scid can do that too.

I didn't realise there were several other Linux users here, heh :D.

Re: Tournament choice: grade limit or time control?

I've played rapid events before (including Richmond), but the time control is far too quick for me. I need the thinking time :). Richmond was well organised, though (as are Adam Raoof's Golders Green events). I may start playing some more this year though, because I think I've improved a little bit,...

Re: Tournament choice: grade limit or time control?

I played 4 games and then withdrew (I had a cold and having a headache/feeling coldy doesn't help my game). Here's a quick summary of my games: Round 1: White vs. Johann Power (108) 0-1 Sicilian Defense, Scheveningen (or Najdorf, I'm not sure. a6 was played) A good loss. I say that because I thought...

Re: Another win!

Probably :D. I guess you were probably playing Sheik, since you seem to be of similar strengths. I was at the other end :).

Re: Another win!

It could be the same guy, though I don't know my opponent's history. He was quite a bit older than myself (27), too.

Agreed, this forum is a great place to get chess advice :D.

Re: Another win!

Thanks all :). Sam: thanks very much for that. I think I just played 2. ... Nc6 out of habit really, because I was expecting the Italian. Must try not to play automatically! I did think about 7. Be6, but I got worried about exposing my king. Pushing the a pawn to a4 was also something I thought abou...

Another win!

I don't intend to post all my wins here, but I'm quite proud of this one from tonight because I'm pretty sure I should have lost :D. It's a Hammersmith internal tournament game. 1.e3 e5 2.e4 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.d3 Bc5 5.h3 O-O 6.Nf3 d6 7.a3 h6 8.Nc3 Bd7 9.Nd5 Nxd5 10.Bxd5 Qe7 11.c3 Be6 12.Bxc6 bxc6 13.B...

Re: London Chess Classic 2011

I was surprised that the organisers didn't mention West Kensington station on the website, as it's not too far to walk from there either (not that it matters now, but still).

Re: Tournament choice: grade limit or time control?

Krishna, thanks for that. I had a brief look at the KJCA website. There's an Institute of Chess and they do exams?! You really do learn something new every day :). Roger, thanks also. Heh, if I even managed 0.5/2 through the first two rounds I'd be ecstatic. It's not likely to happen though, so I su...

Re: London Chess Classic 2011

Just watching John Nunn and Vishy Anand's astronomy lecture. Ahh, reminding me lots of undergraduate astrophysics. Nunn's quote in response to a question was funny: if you want to ask about aliens, you should speak to the FIDE president. Good times!

Re: Tournament choice: grade limit or time control?

Thanks Ola. Yeah, I started doing problems at chesstempo.com a while ago, but had to put those down for a while (I think because of PhD viva preparation and panic). I've recently started to pick those up again, so I'll be getting back to doing them every day. I'll also start reading Simple Chess by ...

Re: Tournament choice: grade limit or time control?

Everyone seems to make good points here. I find chess quite addictive, so I'm still playing even though I take a lot of beatings (in 11 games so far this season, I've managed just one win and one draw). It is disheartening to lose so much and I did have to withdraw from the Imperial congress after I...

Re: Tournament choice: grade limit or time control?

Thanks all. Yeah, I figured playing the U115 would give me more of a chance to get opponents that I'm more evenly matched with, so that was the big advantage of playing there. This past weekend, I managed to get past 40 moves in 2 out of 4 games, against opponents graded 114 and 75 (and I think I co...

Tournament choice: grade limit or time control?

Hi all, I'd like to get in some more OTB games before the new year and since I won't be playing any more league games until then, I've found there are two events that I can get to: 5th Northwick Park Congress (17-18 December), U115, 30 moves in 90 min + 15 min to finish London Christmas Congress (28...
