Re: London Chess Classic 2011

Cheers Adam! Yeah, you should have my 4 games somewhere in the pile :). I misunderstood the time control for the weekend tournament. I thought after 30 moves, both our clocks would have 15 minutes added (which is what I'm used to in leagues) and was confused when that didn't happen. I didn't realise...

Re: London Chess Classic 2011

Thanks all. I may put my game up at some point :).

Adam: were we supposed to return our badges? If so, I didn't realise .

Re: London Chess Classic 2011

Yay, I got my first win in slow chess in my last game of the U120 today :D. My opponent hadn't played competitively before and lost a piece to a fork. Mating was hard, but I did it eventually. Yay! My game finished early, so I could have gone to the commentary room for the main event, but I was rath...

Re: London Chess Classic 2011

I'm playing in the U120 section this weekend. I think it's too strong a section for me, but unfortunately there's no U100 section :(.

Re: Nicky vs. Daniel

Thanks lots for that. The book by Stean sounds particularly good, based on the reviews I've seen (including one from Daniel!).

Re: Nicky vs. Daniel

I was tempted to write "obviously" and "impossible", but then I thought some people might be able to do it, lol. Advantages like what? Space? Getting rid of your opponent's pawns in the centre? I played Be3 and Qd2 in the game above so that I could (at some point) exchange bishops. Things like that?...

It doesn't seem like you were, to be honest :).

Thanks for the help. I'm not even sure what kinds of plans I should be trying to make. It seems difficult to plan all the way to a mate, so perhaps there are more simple things to consider?

Re: Nicky vs. Daniel

Thanks for all the comments. As usual, this forum is amazing! Yeah, I didn't really have a plan with Bc4 and just thought that the d pawn needed to be defended even more. I see know (thanks Gavin) that the bishop there (or on b3) is almost (?) as bad as when it was on f3. Hence, leaving it on e2 wou...

Nicky vs. Daniel

Hi all, I didn't really know what to use as a thread title, so the one I've chosen seems fitting to me. Here's a game that Daniel O'Dowd and I played this morning on FICS. He suggested posting it here for comments. It was a fun and so was the resulting discussion. Apparently, my main problem was not...

Re: How did I do?

I think I'll give up soon :/. My game 4 was horrible; it only lasted half an hour. Here it is if anyone wants a good laugh: 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 c5 4.Nge2 Nc6 5.e5 Qb6 6.Be3 cxd4 7.Na4 Qa5+ 8.c3 dxe3 9.fxe3 Nxe5 10.b3 Nf6 11.Ng3 Bd7 12.Nb2 Qxc3+ 13.Qd2 Qxd2+ 14.Kxd2 Bb4+ 15.Ke2 Rc8 16.Nd3 Bb5 17.a3...

Re: How did I do?

Thanks to everyone for the help. I'll look at Jack's post again later, as I'll need to go through my game to understand it. Geoff: leave pawns alone - will do! it seems to me that in neither game you had a plan. In neither game did it look like you were trying to achieve anything, you were just shuf...

Re: How did I do?

I think b4 was another of my "not sure what to do now" moves . Thanks, though. I suppose after 16. Rad1 Nc4, I'd still need to play Bxc4, otherwise I'd lose the b pawn and have to move the rook.

Re: How did I do?

Yeah, I really wish I'd played Nd2 in the first game. Oh well, at least I'm (hopefully) learning. I wasn't even in time trouble either, so I should have used the clock more. I think I improved on that in game 2, though. When I played Ne4 in the second one, I was kind of stuck for a move to make :oop...

How did I do?

Hi all, Hopefully no-one's annoyed by me and my questions yet :D. I've been playing at the Imperial Congress this weekend and have gotten through three rounds so far, losing all my games (which is unsurprising really, given that my opponents have been a lot stronger than me, as well as my spectacula...

Re: My first good result in league chess :D

I know nothing about the Caro-Kann, so I was surprised I managed to get to move 6 playing book moves. It didn't occur to me to play h4 (rather than Be2), as I was just trying to develop pieces. I don't really know what I was doing with Qe5 :D. I think I wanted to try and get rid of the f6 knight and...
