Re: RE: prize money

No doubt the top half of the Major Open will be slightly offended by the comments in this thread. Alot of them are very capable of getting a win or a draw against IMs and FMs, even some GMs (no names!). In fact looking at the results of congresses, there are at least 6 players who have achieved a re...

Re: Subscription concessions?

The fact that people can't agree on subscription costs and who to subsidise and by how much shows just how tough local councils and central government have it, who effectively are having to do this on a larger scale.

Re: An ECF Junior Squad

It seems to me that Peter Purland has done a great job so far. Parents seem to think that competing in the euros and the worlds is a ticket to stardom, it is not. There are many great chess players who didn't get selected for the England team.- Just like Paul Scholes wasn't used as well as he could ...

Re: 2010/11 Championship

Lancashire have their biggest city taken away from them in Manchester. (Not that I want to open that can of worms; I'm just saying their population is cut dramatically by losing it.) Rubbish, they have just lost an U100 semi by fielding a Manchester player who was ineligible on grading - Lancs beli...

Re: County Finals

Wasn't there a final 6-7 years ago in which two teams from essentially the same county under different names played in the final?-Did anyone complain then? Probably not. Also, it's like saying in Cup football whereby two teams from the same City end up playing in an FA Cup Semi Final in Wembley. The...

Local leagues and young adult particpation

Hello everyone, I was wondering what proportion of your local league players were in the 18-28 ish age range? It has been mentioned recently that league chess is declining, are we overly reliant on the Fischer generation of British chess players to fill our league? Probably most important is how man...

Re: The Funding of the English Chess Federation vote

Frankly, why should Sean bother to advertise non-online entry/payment? His events are nearly always full - getting more entries than the vast majority of congresses - and he does it using online payment without printed entry forms, which makes his life easier administratively. To give every member ...

Re: Do you believe in God

I shall assume those that are agnostic or athiests do not celebrate Christmas, it does seem contradictory to do so otherwise.

Re: D.1 - Two Rulings

In the first position White can play something like Bc4 to stop the King getting in, but really it looks like a draw! In the second position it would be interesting to know where the Bishop moved from- because otherwise White should play something like Re1 to trap the knight and then to ultimately t...

Re: British Chess Championships 2011

Ideally we'd have some sort of internet channel, like a Youtube broadcast in combination with the usual excellent commentary and board moves. You could have an overhead camera like they do in golf, whereby a commentator focuses on one position for a bit and then moves to another one say in Major Op...

Re: ECF Membership

I didn't mean to cause any grievences about the county situation, it was just an observation. I mean, If you take someone like a Peter Kay, from Bolton, his accent is very much lancashire sounding.

Re: ECF Membership

I agree with David Pardoe, as we have found in all walks of life it is important in these difficult economic times for people to share their resources in order to be sustainable. Maybe a United Kingdom association is the way forward to cut costs, but maybe this is now not feasible given that a the B...

Anyone having a street party

for the Royal Wedding? I know quite alot are around my community, hoopefully the nice weather will contine. Far be it for me to presume alot of British chess players are hermits staring at a computer screen all day, but every strong chess player realises the importance of their monarch...
