Re: Director of Finance

I'm amazed at the fact that a salary figure of £100k+ is left unchallenged. The ECF is simply not that big an organisation to contemplate a salary on that scale (and,as has been said, it would need some other budget increases to support it). From my experience in the charity sector (like the ECF, r...

Inspiring a new generation

I've just spent a great day helping out at the Worcestershire Megafinal in the UK Land Chess Challenge. It was terrific (and in the case of the stronger players, a little terrifying) to see 150 or so kids enthusiastically playing chess. This year, we had the added treat of Keith Arkell's presence th...

Re: The Future of English Chess

Thanks very much for the responses so far. I'd like to pick up on a few of the points raised: The non-chessplayers, by the way, have homed in immediately on the thought of getting celebrities involved. How best to do this, I do not know. I agree. In a perfect world, I'd love to see someone like Step...

Re: The Future of English Chess

I am puzzled, though. The issues that you’ve listed below need to be addressed right now. Is the 10-year horizon your choice, or your guidance from the powers that be? If the latter, do you not sense the danger that anything you produce will be kicked into the long grass? Presumably, you’re hop...

Re: The Future of English Chess

If there is anyone who feels uncomfortable posting their thoughts in this public forum, I'm arranging to have my contact details included on the ECF website (http://www.englishchess.org.uk/organisa ... icials.htm) so that I can be contacted direct by e-mail.

The Future of English Chess

Some of you will have seen the thread on a similar theme under "ECF Matters". The various contributions at that time were very useful, but I wanted to reopen the debate and ask for your help again. For my sins, I was appointed ECF Strategic Planning Officer at the end of last year. At the April Coun...

Re: Manager of Prisons Chess

Fair enough, let's hope for a report sooner rather than later? Sure, just bear in mind that much of the discussion would translate into documents (i.e. budget, business plan) to be presented to the ECF Council for approval, so I wouldn't expect the detail to appear in a meeting report ahead of that...

Re: Manager of Prisons Chess

Carl, I have to respect the confidentiality of the meeting, so I can't really say much. With the ECF Council meeting coming up on 18 April, you can imagine that much of the discussion was about topics that will need to be covered there, such as the ECF budget, next year's business plan and, of cours...

Re: Manager of Prisons Chess

I'm sure it's true that some members of the Board read the Forum, but in this case I had spotted the mistake myself and mentioned it at the ECF Board meeting on Saturday.

Re: A Vision for the Future

Thanks for the link, Mick - very interesting.

Thanks also to everyone else who's replied so far (although I did get a bit of a sinking feeling when the free sets issue cropped up). Please keep the ideas coming.

Re: The Long Term Plan

I think that this topic is misnamed. Before there can be a long term plan, we need to define the vision for the desired future. I'd prefer to call it "A Vision for the Future" or perhaps "What do we want for English chess?"

Carl - Are you able to rename the thread please?

A Vision for the Future

As usual the SCCU reporting is excellent, see here:- http://www.sccu.ndo.co.uk/bcf.htm I agree. The SCCU report helps to correct a few inaccuracies that I spotted earlier in this thread, and it's a pretty good summary as far as I can tell. For obvious reasons, I have a particular interest in item (...

Re: Board Meeting : Saturday, January 10th 2009

I have a question hopefully somebody can answer for me if FIDE do not recognise england as a nation state where does this leave the ecf will we have to go back to some sort of BCF As I understood it from Saturday's meeting, FIDE gave an assurance at the relevant meeting that non-nation states which...

Re: Strategic Planning Officer

Apologies for not introducing myself sooner. I wasn't previously registered on the forum, and it's taken me a little while to twig that there was discussion about my appointment and then for me to get registered (I'm on holiday in Singapore at the moment, so quite a few time zones away). I put my na...
