Re: Reporting of 4NCL in the media

I have a cunning plan   I don't have a newspaper column with which to wield my evil power, but I do have the forum  So,perhaps each time a columnist publishes a loss of mine,I could respond by publishing a loss of theirs of equivalent shame and ignominy on this very forum  :tw...

Re: British Championship Thread

On the subject of quick draws: My last Draw in the British in under 30 moves was in the last round, with Black, v Gallagher on top board in 2001,as it happens. I received an inordinate amount of criticism for this(admittedly wimpish) decision. Do a little investigating though, and you'll be amazing to...

Re: keith arkell to win the next 5 second week always does well.

Hey c'mon chaps, can a man not have an occasional poor peformance in peace, without the vultures gathering  :( My thinking has been a bit wonky this tournament :? I think today I played a good game, but have no idea why I didn't play 51.. f4+ winning by force(eg 52 Kg2 Re1 or 52 Kg4 e3!).I looked...

Re: 'Betfair' have set up a market on the British Ch!

Ian Thompson gives a very good example of why it is not a good idea for players in the tournament to get too involved, which,by the way,I stated in my introductory posting on this thread. I'm a bit confused about what you're saying though Matt. What I am saying essentially is that it is not acceptable...

Re: 'Betfair' have set up a market on the British Ch!

No Stewart,Chris Duncan's company(or the company which Chris Duncan has some involvement in) is ''Betsson''. Betfair is the world's leading betting exchange.Betsson is much smaller, but has hitherto involved itself more than Betfair in chess trading/betting.Lately though Betfair has become much more ...

[quote="Keith Arkell"]Go Tom Watson!!!!!!! AS an ex professional gambler though I would say that the winner is Ross Fisher. His wife is expecting. This kind of thing can have a big effect on normal expectation. We saw it in chess when Flear won a big event, way way above his expectation, when his marria...

Re: Brits abroad

Nice one Alex, yes I saw that before - a very impressive analysis. It puts things in perspective. I don't see any advantage in dwelling on one amazing, brief moment in our recent history, and using that as some kind of yardstick by which we measure and condemn all subsequent efforts. Adams and Short are...

Re: Brits abroad

The comment was made after Short's and Conquest's victories, but before Haslinger's and Williams's I'm more optimistic about this than you are Jonathan. Take a look at the Indian list on the FIDE site, and look at the difference in the size of the countries! They are 10th and not really very far ahead...

Brits abroad

On some thread somewhere recently I remember reading a curmudgeonly remark about how Brits no longer win strong International tournaments, because we are supposedly going down the plughole. In doing so they dismissed the 'exception' of Short and Conquest's brilliant recent victories. Well, here is ano...

Re: 'Betfair' have set up a market on the British Ch!

I would price him at 6:4 to win in Scotland ( or 2.5 in Betfair speak). So that would make his price for the double about 58

Re: So who's going to the British Chess Championships?

Stewart, I'm not sure there are any simple ways of posing the question if we include none-British Isles players. I don't believe literally that ''English chess is weaker now than in the 1980s'',even though it is true that the world ranking of our best players is significantly lower. What I believe i...
