Re: 'Betfair' have set up a market on the British Ch!

The penny has just dropped! So all I need to do is offer everyone a draw, hope they accept, and walk away with 5k....the only thing is first prize isn't 5k it's 6.5k(it includes 1.5K for the top English player)

'Betfair' have set up a market on the British Ch!

Leading sports betting exchange 'Betfair' have installed a market on the 2009 British Championship. This means that anybody over 18 can go on-line and bet for(back) or against(lay) any of the players winning the Championship. The market is ''in-play'' for the entire duration of the event,so that for...

Re: So who's going to the British Chess Championships?

So,stronger or weaker than last year at the top? We have lost GMs Pert N Lalic B Haslinger Davies Flear But gained GMs Howell D Wells Summerscale I would argue stronger because the top players who have come back have got better: Conquest + 36 ELO Jones + 5 Gordon + 29 Williams + 31 Arkell + 15 Which...

Re: South Wales International 2009

As the site has gone quiet I guess I could give an update.Things finished thus: 1 GM Radulski 2539 8/9 2 GM Arkell 2521 7 3-5 GM Miezis 2572 6.5 IM Petrovic 2479 IM Marusenko 2323 6 IM Rudd 2326 6 Rainy, hilly, friendly. In an innocuous position, after I had just chalked up 2 out of 3 off seeds 1,2 and...

Re: South Wales International 2009

In round 4 Radulski beat Miezis in the clash of the top 2 seeds.

By the way, check out Jack's round 3 game if you want some entertainment. At one point he had 2 Bishops and 5 pawns for a R+N+N !

Re: Big Slick Tournament

I believe that Henley needed to win that game in order to become a GM.

If I remember correctly this was his first norm, but, due to the length of the tournament, one norm was sufficient.

Re: Scottish Chess Championship 2009

Heard rumblings (again) that other countries GM's don't get treated the same as English GM's when it comes to the Britsh. But that's all politics as far as I'm concerned - I stay away from that stuff. It get all too serious - Chess is fun. Perhaps I am being naeve,or am missing something, but it see...

Re: Big Slick Tournament

Kjartansson's sacrificial attack against Arkell looked dangerous to me, but Arkell told me afterwards that he was always winning. Arkell and Cherniaev lead with 2.5/3 and play each other tomorrow. I think I was easily winning positionally. My pieces were on the ideal squares. I thought he might try ...

Re: Arkell Simul at Idle Chess Club

Cheers Andrew. Thanks for a tough but friendly ''match''. My body is well versed in dealing with curries by now,and the Bradford varieties are pretty good :P I was already aware of Ihor's strength, having had a very tough game against him at Paignton a few years back, but there really are a lot of tou...

Re: Lowest Graded British Champion

So the top 14 French are ahead by 166 ELO points using the list about to be published, which equates to about 12 per player,ie 1.5 ECF grading points

Re: Lowest Graded British Champion

Ok Jonathan I guess you are right that we have lost some ground in any case, relative to such countries as France and Spain, but not a great deal - not an unsurmountable chasm! Maybe the explanation is economic.Perhaps without the availability of relatively well paid 'proper jobs'',we would be able to...
