Well player Kjartansson. After 3 rounds he has already surpassed his final tally from the 9 round tournament at the Big Slick Poker Club!

Re: Scottish Chess Championship 2009

Heard rumblings (again) that other countries GM's don't get treated the same as English GM's when it comes to the Britsh. But that's all politics as far as I'm concerned - I stay away from that stuff. It get all too serious - Chess is fun. Perhaps I am being naeve,or am missing something, but it see...

Re: Big Slick Tournament

Kjartansson's sacrificial attack against Arkell looked dangerous to me, but Arkell told me afterwards that he was always winning. Arkell and Cherniaev lead with 2.5/3 and play each other tomorrow. I think I was easily winning positionally. My pieces were on the ideal squares. I thought he might try ...

Re: Arkell Simul at Idle Chess Club

Cheers Andrew. Thanks for a tough but friendly ''match''. My body is well versed in dealing with curries by now,and the Bradford varieties are pretty good :P I was already aware of Ihor's strength, having had a very tough game against him at Paignton a few years back, but there really are a lot of tou...

Re: Lowest Graded British Champion

Ok Jonathan I guess you are right that we have lost some ground in any case, relative to such countries as France and Spain, but not a great deal - not an unsurmountable chasm! Maybe the explanation is economic.Perhaps without the availability of relatively well paid 'proper jobs'',we would be able to...

Re: Lowest Graded British Champion

But not from the point of view of our standing in the chess world. England were number 2 at our peak.An all time high in ranking, but were we really the 2nd best or was that just one amazing moment.Admittedly around the late 80s we were near the top anyway, but as far as I can see the reason we are no...

Re: Lowest Graded British Champion

I bet you've improved in all areas of understanding and tecnique Matt :) but I guess ability to calculate stays more or less the same :| In my experience 170s are far far tougher to put away than 10,15,20 years ago.I mean my % remains the same but the games are much higher quality. They sometimes pre...
