Re: Worrying times

Epidemics tend to cross barriers of class and wealth though, there's no escaping them. (Already here in Spain some very senior political figures ... have tested positive.) Very prescient Justin, given that in the UK sufferers now included HRH The Prince of Wales and the Prime Minister. "In the slau...

Re: Worrying times

Let’s hope it’s all planned and under control, but I’m hearing the military and surprisingly a lot of tanks and hardware are rolling into London and up north to Edinburgh today. Similar reports in Paris. Are we about to be under martial law? No - Boris has decided that the best way to tackle the vi...

Could "intermingling" not be a temporary solution for the interim in these extraordinary circumstances? Intermingling can hardly be a temporary solution, as the results are permanently held in the grading system. As for suspect games not being graded, there is an argument that any game played onlin...

Re: Covid-19 - Suspend Chess Immediately

The thing I find hard to visualise here is the end game. Under what circumstances do things start up again? The virus is surely never going to disappear completely. If you've never had it you're always going to be vulnerable to it, and there will always be people out there you can catch it off. The...

Sorry, but I don't know how to present the cartoon here
Right-click the image, save it to your computer, then use the 'Attachments' tab when creating your post, using the 'Place inline' option. (The method may be different if using a tablet or phone!)

Soheil. Had you written My father is a hospital CEO in Shiraz, Iran, and he ordered the entire hospital to be sprayed with disinfectant 2 times a day. You can follow suit. That would probably have been better English.
Soheil's version would be a good way of solving the bed shortage though! :)

Re: Curious Touch Move Query

Interesting. The law (4.7) states "When, as a legal move or part of a legal move, a piece has been released on a square, it cannot be moved to another square on this move." But in this case it is presumably not clear on which square the piece was 'released'.

I played b5, and my opponent stopped the clock and called the arbiter, claimin the I touched my queen. I told the arbiter "possible, but if she says so, I must have had".
The important thing is not whether you touched the queen, but whether you touched it with the intention of moving it.

Re: Membership Doppelgangers

I think it in efficient use of time to type in lots of information onto the website, and also creates opportunity for internet theft from my bank account. I congratulate for the ECF office on my annual phone call to pay. It took less than a minute to pay this this season. :D I cannot remember my us...

Membership Doppelgangers

An article has recently appeared on the ECF website exhorting people not to create a new membership record when renewing their membership. I fear this is unlikely to help much. The problem is that the Azolve site makes it too easy for this to happen. It should query if no value is entered in the Gra...

Re: Hastings Congress

Do we have any alcohol tolerance in Chess? Need to be. Being 'drunk' is a subjective description. It is the behaviour of the player which is the issue, and this is already covered in the laws. As alcohol has a negative effect on performance, I am usually quite happy if my opponent is drinking (thou...
