Al-yekk-in, which I believe is the Russian pronunciation?
My erstwhile Ukrainian club mate told me it is pronounced Al-yokk-in.

Re: Annoying message on Lichess

It seems silly to have these messages at all at fast time controls. It's only really a problem at longer time controls when people sometimes let their clock run down with 10 or 20 minutes left.

The correct link is https://www.heraldscotland.com/announce ... h_Mac_Rae/.

Sorry to hear this, I played him at the British a few years ago.

Re: End of an era

I think there was a certain snob value in quoting prices in guineas. Also, it enabled a 5% price mark-up without it being too obvious, e.g. 20 guineas = £21.

Are you able to share your reasons?
Because I know him well and it's not the sort of thing he would be involved in. But to eliminate all doubt I will ask him and report back.

but perhaps the Stephen Ward playing for Altrincham and Hale, graded 73, may be the man you're looking for?
I very much doubt it!

Re: Arbitration question

White wins because it is mate, whether he would have promoted to a queen, rook, bishop or knight. I am with Alex on this one. Law 5.1.1 states that "The game is won by the player who has checkmated his opponent's king". In the situation described by Soheil, White has taken an action which will lead...

Re: ECF Finance Meeting

It's less of an issue for gold members as membership is compulsory if you have a FIDE rating or you are a FIDE arbiter, and there could be issues if you lapse, assuming we ever play OTB again. There are no issues if you lapse, you simply join again (or upgrade) the next time you want to play in a F...

Our Douglas didn't have the benefit of the internet and high resolution photographs, but the bird does have white and black spots on its back - just don't expect 64 squares.
Difficult to tell whether the board is the right way round! :)

In the 6th game of the 1972 match, did Spassky really lead the applause for Fischer after the game, as portrayed in the film?

Re: Options for Season Completion

It does obviously all greatly depend on when we're allowed back to play though. It might well be that there's only a few months of the 20/21 season left, in which case it'll be most logical to scrap 20/21 entirely and finish 19/20 in its place. This seems sensible - even if the 2020-21 season was t...

Re: Harry Golombek games

Golombek's book "The Game of Chess" was my first chess book. I expect many players of a similar vintage may say the same. Indeed! Unfortunately I no longer have it. 81rdeg2bmqL.jpg I think mine may have been a later edition - it had a newly added chapter 'The Younger School' in which he wrote about...
